Guten Tag! Mission Burritos in Berlin!

One of our best friends in the world is German. Her name is Anna. She lived here for a couple years while going to school, but now she’s back in Germany, and she moves to Berlin in the fall. She misses us somewhat I’m sure, but even more than that she misses a good Mission burrito. The other day in the Introduce Yourself section, reader Johnny0 delivered some good news:

Last month I took a German buddy of mine to El Farolito for a burrito. At first he was scared, but now he won’t shut up about it.

Just minutes ago he sent me pictures of a taqueria in Berlin he found — Dolores Burritos. I had to share — check out the map on the wall!

Here it is (click to make large):

Photo page here, includes the exclamation “They carry Anchor Steam and Negra Modelo!” and a link to an article about the establishment’s founders:

Having spent considerable time in California, the two compared notes and decided the city had a burrito gap just crying out to be filled by a fat tortilla stuffed with adobo beef, pinto beans and, yes, guacamole.

It also has nice things to say about the Mission, as well as some insights into how the place is being received by locals. Link.

Finally, I told Anna the news, and here’s what she had to say:

OMG!!!!! oh my god, oh my god, oh my god!!!! how excietd am i???? sooooo excited!!

    My favorite post yet.

While I neglected to go there when I was in Berlin, several people told me about it when I told them I was from SF. Good to know it’s there, should I move there… which is a possibility… now if I could find good coffee, a decent (American) breakfast I’d be happy there.

OK fine, we’ve exported a burrito place. Now let’s get that girl Anna on the line and import a DONER KEBAB place!!!!!!

California needs doner kebabs. But only the german kind!

Holy crap! I’m going to Berlin in September. I am so eating there. It’s not at all like going to Europe and eating at McDonalds is it? After a few days of schnitzel I will need a good burrito anyhow.

My buddy’s post-burrito report was very positive. I am so inventing a business trip to Berlin — he’s already lining up customers. After a week in Europe I start jonesing for a burrito in a bad way, so this will be a godsend.

A doner kebab place in SF would be pretty sweet though. Especially if they had Bitburger.

  6. Jesse! says:

oh yes, dönner kebabs for sure! lived off those things!

  7. Luba says:

I’m bummed it wasn’t there when I visited – looks intriguing! But tell me, when’s the lasst time you saw a REAL burrito place that looks as steril as this place???

  8. Allan says:

i bet farolito looked sterile when it first opened

good mexican food pandering to der deutschen, meaning the cheese was gouda. so weird. i spoke to the waitress in spanish, she also spoke english, german, and french, found out la dueña was from texas. the next night i was treated to a proper tex-mex dinner, cheap and spicy. perfect for a sanfranciscan née texan.

I lived in the mission district of San Francisco for over 30 years. Before that Los Angeles. I know Mexican food. This is German/Mexican. If people like it, thats great but don’t call it authentic. It’s not. The Port burrito was badly prepared with some colored red pork with no flavor, lettuce and a slasa that was mostly tomatoes. Cilantro? No esta! I miss Mexican food being in Berlin for 2 years. I have to make my own. Not Tex/Mex but German/Mex. Not the real chingadera!

  18. moshe smith says:

Bad food. Of couse if you enjoy, it’s not bad but it’s not Mexican. German/mex is all I can say but it’s not real mexican food. I lived in the Mission for over 30 years, they would not last one day there but I would say they are catering to German tastes. Not the real thing.

  19. Whoa! This blog looks exactly like my old one! It’s on a totally different subject but it has pretty much the same page layout and design. Outstanding choice of colors!
