Save the City Some Money, Sure, So Long As You're Sure Your Passed-Out Homeless Person Isn't Bludgeoned

If you see a homeless person passed out on the street, call the Mobile Access Assistant Patrol Service (MAPS MAP) at (415) 431-7400. Okay, checks out. But like what if the person is passed out because they’re diabetic or epileptic or got bludgeoned? Homeless people can need medical attention too.

You are not qualified to decide why they need help. MAPS can give them medical attention too.

As someone who has had to call MAP, ambulances, and/or the cops for street denizens in varying states of illness/intoxication many times:

The MAP van is an important service. But it doesn’t run 24 hours a day, and they can’t necessarily respond fast in an emergency. (I’ve called and had them say “we’re not running tonight, just call the paramedics.”) Also, if MAP arrives and sees that a person is too ill or too high to stand up on their own, they have to call 911 anyhow (or at least this is what I seem to remember.)

here’s what I do: I ask. “hey, you look like you could use some help, do you want me to call MAP?”
If they are unable to respond, call 911.
If they say “yes please,” “no thanks” or “fuck off”, then do what they say.
