May I be the first to put forward the idea of a conspiracy to shut down 12 Galaxies? Just follow along here a second.

Anybody remember Grasshopper Alec Kaplan? He ran for mayor last Novemeber and was perhaps one of the wackiest guys ever to run in this town, and that's saying something. He ran an unsanctioned taxicab from his own car, which he also happened to live out of (from everything I've heard, also one of the wackiest cabbies ever). But now, does anybody remember the "don't get taken for an ILLEGAL ride" campaign? Well, that was aimed at people just like Grasshopper. My pet theory is that it *was* aimed at him. He made Newsom look ridiculous at the debate, sharing a stage with a weirdo making goofball eyes while Mr. Rubberhair is trying to defend surveillance cameras.

It's not that hard to imagine vengeance wrought on other candidates. Chicken John's "Ask Dr. Hal" show has been held at 12 Galaxies ever since he sold his own bar. It was his main soapbox during the election, and Chicken even held his Loser's Ball there. How hard would it be for a mayor to communicate to his vice cops the fact that, hey, this place needs more surprise inspections? Or to persuade underagers to try and get in? Or to tell them both to do it on the same nights? The PLOT SICKENS.

Here's things I haven't researched:

1) If, as rumor has it, 12 Galaxies financial burdens were because of underage drinking fines
2) If the mayor has any real control over vice inspections
3) If Grasshopper is actually his real name

As a booking agent who brought some of the first national touring acts to 12 Galaxies, it is with a heavy heart to see this place go. I hope San Francisco knows what a shame this is, and 12 Galaxies, you will be sorely missed!
