My New Favorite Zine

My new favorite zine is Stay Away From Other People by Lisa Hanawalt. It’s full of gorgeous drawings of well-dressed zoo animals like these, as well as entertaining lists like “12 Things To Do When You Are Stuck In Traffic” and “3 Unpleasant Sensations”. It’s kind of dirty and kind of violent and I love it. Get it here.

Hater Tries to Spoil Mission Street Food Fun

Last night, we got to Mission Street Food at 7:55 and the line was already half a block long. In addition to this, some maniac was causing a commotion up front shouting something about permitting. We were very hungry, so we went to La Taqueria instead. Undaunted, Burrito Justice stuck it out and got the full story, and some interesting photos (like the one above). Also, bacon. Link.

High-Caliber Handgun Fire Last Night?

Non-Missionite Chris writes:

I was at 21st and Valencia and heard gunshots last night. They seemed to come from the direction of Mission and 19th-ish. Anyone know what happened? Two sets of sirens followed, which I assume to be police and then ambulance/fire. I would describe the sound as a high caliber handgun. Is the frequency of Mission gun violence escalating or is this ‘normal’? I don’t live in the neighborhood.

Link. What happened? Also, Chris, there’s no such thing as normal.

Mazatlan Street Art

Katie and I just got back from a week in Mazatlan, a city whose street art and street food scenes just might rival those of the Mission District. So here are some pictures of graffiti and stickers and things (click to enlarge). We would’ve taken pictures of the bacon-wrapped hot dogs too, but we were busy eating.

I wrote more about our trip at my Twitter account, here. And thanks to Lael for holding down the fort.

Billy Bob Thornton Lookalike Blown By Tranny on 49-Mission

SFist has the scoop:

You might remember the incident, huh? About 9:45pm last night, heading north. Why would I know the time, well I had to look at my cell phone to keep my eyes from looking over as you pulled his cock through his jeans and into your mouth.

How could we all not notice you? You were so ugly and those boobs were so little it was just obvious. Then the guy you were with looked like Billy Bob Thorton in “Slingblade”. Except even weirder looking. Quite a pair.

It gets better and better. Link.

Earthquake Horrors!

WHAT IM SEEING dot com just put up an analysis of the Quake Quiz SF website, and its chilling graphics in particular. The one above really hits home, am I right? At least it’s still in tact. Link.

Hordes of Dorks Do Stuff in Unison in Dolores Park

Reader Bryan Haggerty pointed us toward this Improv Everywhere video, in which a bunch of people gather in the park and listen to the same mp3 at the same time. The mp3 tells them to do stuff, and they do it, and it’s all sponsored by Yahoo! and they got a helicopter to shoot aerial footage. Link.

Update: mcas says, “I, too, love doing things so I can spend the next 4 days at my over-paid tech job looking through flickr for photos of myrself to add to my facebook.” Haha!

Red Bull Recap

Over at Static Fix, Alex has a word-for-word reenactment of the performance delivered by the play-by-play announcers at Saturday’s Red Bull Soapbox Race in Dolores Park. It begins thus:

Stu, is this great or what? This is great Jay! It fuckin’ rocks to be here right now in San FRAN-CISCO!!! Give it up for these fans. Let’s hear the fans. Whoooooooooo! Hahaha. That’s right. We’re here in Dolores Park. Red Bull bringing it to us so hard right now with the Soapbox Derby in DOLOR-ES! Whooo! Let’s throw it down to my boy Shiboya. Shiboya! Wassuuuuuuuup?!

The whole rest of the show is “transcribed” here, and paired with some nice photos (like the one above).

We also like Carlos Reyes’ coverage.

Mysterious Fire Last Thursday

Reader Jenn sent in these photos of some kind of smoke or something coming off the US Bank building or its vicinity at 22nd and Mission last Thursday. What happened?

Update: BayBigr has the scoop.
