There were about 6 rounds of three shots. We saw cop cars and heard some sort of announcement but it was hard to make out. So we knew war hadn't broken out but it was still scary. I called Mission Station and they said they couldn't let neighborhoods know ahead of time because they didn't want "the bad guys" to know where the detectors are. I think they said there are 14 of them in the Mission. I'll make sure to read Mission Mission every day now.

I was outside on the corner of 22nd and alabama when they all went off... It sounded like a war just started because it was coming from all directions. I was scared out of my mind! I didn't know it was a test until this morning.

Wow -- the gunshot detector data is <a href="http://sf.everyblock.com/police-calls/by-incident-type/2302/" rel="nofollow">available on EveryBlock.</a>

Anyone know what neighborhoods they are in? Bayview, Mission, Western Addition are on the map. Silver Terrace is mentioned <a href="http://sfist.com/2008/03/07/did_you_hear_it.php" rel="nofollow">in this SFist article</a>.

Oakland, Minneapolis and Rochester have reported decent results. While it looks like they are installed in places where the cops already know there are gun problems, most gunshots go unreported, and when they are, the callers have a hard time determining where the shot came from.

The quickened reaction times may have a social effect in decreasing gun fire. Also, cops can get alerts in their cars and get to the scene than much more quickly.

so what does shotspotter do again? tells them where the shots are, right? i guess that's good for potential casualties lying on the ground. shooters probably aren't sticking around after they let go the rounds though. i figure they'll be running away pretty quick.

don't get me wrong...anything they want to do to try to prevent shooting is cool with me. i am in favor.

personally i'd rather see "adam" style hi-rez cameras on all those corners. privately manned. creating jobs, ya know....
