12 Galaxies to Become 'Blue Macaw'

Tablehopper has the scoop:

Moving into the 12 Galaxies space in the Mission will be the ~BLUE MACAW~, a restaurant, bar, and club with a focus on international music. I will have more details in a few weeks, but the opening is slated for April or May.

Also, what in god’s name is “international music”?

Moreover, what kind of comprehensive overhaul is going to be required to turn that crusty dive into a “restaurant”?

Furthermore, “Blue Macaw”? Sounds a little Rainforest Cafe to me. What do we think?

Probably very little: 12 Galaxies had installed a new kitchen just a few months before they closed, serving pizza and a few other items.

    HATE IT.

  3. zinzin says:

how could we have any fucking idea what we think till we actually see the place?

    oh, wait….this is the mission…

where we already know everything about everything well in advance of any actual data…where our personal, individual opinions, wants and needs trump anyone else’s…and where, by default, we assume that nothing could possibly meet our standards of hip or cool or arty…even when we don’t now a fucking thing about it.

    THAT’S real smart thinking.

here’s someone making an investment in the hood. building a restaurant, bar and club. with music.

    already the hate is on.

    pathetic.

(that said, i do think the name is kind of lame).

That’s all I meant: lame name. I fully endorse not having the place sit empty.

  5. zinzin says:

oh jeez. did i go off half cocked there? ah well. sorry about that. i should never post before my coffee / valium.

  6. Travis says:

    International Music=World Music.

    That stings.

  7. GG says:

It’s not that I hate the idea of Blue Macaw, I just hate the fact that 12 Galaxies isn’t there anymore. I saw some terrific performances there, and none of them were “international music.” I think I was holding out hope that a 12 Galaxies-like music venue would move in to that location, and I’m disappointed that we’re getting this instead.

I miss 12 Galaxies too, but I’ll be the first to admit I didn’t go to enough shows there. IT’S MY FAULT THEY CLOSED.

“Blue Macaw” sounds like a fern bar in Sarasota. I can picture it in my mind. Beachfront, big windows, ceiling fans, lots of blender drinks.

  9. Mr. Awesome says:

    GG….

    +1

    Miss the G’s like crazy.

  10. phlavor says:

The guy who ran 12 G’s put a lot of money into the space, soundproofing to appease the neighbors, then revamping the AC when the soundproofing kept the heat in, redoing the kitchen, ect., only to have the property owner double the rent when his lease came up.

So don’t blame yourselves for a stupid move by a property owner. BUT do support local small businesses. Especially now. There are a lot of places that are close to the end and your party of four is reason enough for them to not close the kitchen early and maybe get a few more tables that night.

And I do wish Blue Macaw all the luck in the world opening a restaurant/niche music club in the middle of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. But miss 12 Galaxies real bad.

No thank you, I’m going to keep patronizing Rick’s Café Americain.

World music, em I mean international is so 1985. Uh and punk is so 1974, I guess we are making progress in the mission. I was in the Rite Spot a while back on a Friday and there was a guy playing the beat up upright piano in there, now that was good!

  13. jtown says:

cool. I’ll try out their kitchen a few times I’m sure.

it’s such a cavernous/dark space tho…wonder if they’ll somehow get more light in there. Nopa was a pretty awful space too, so who knows – maybe they can pull it off.

    good luck. see ya, 12G!

  14. [...] I believe this rodent is also clearly pining for a nut-filled Valencia Street Park, along with the “Blue Jackal” (my new name for the Blue Macaw International House of Music.) [...]

AC, what AC? What I heard is that the 12 G guys were way behind on the rent, so don’t blame the owner for having to kick them out. Also, they did not redo the kitchen, all they did was serve frozen pizza. They also trashed the place before they left — very uncool.
I stopped in over the weekend for the unofficial opening and the place looks fantastic, it looks clean and cozy.
You can check out pics on Yelp.
As for world music — I have no idea where that rumor is coming from! The management is open to hosting all promoters and all types of shows!
Also, the owner rescues parrots and that is why she chose the name Blue Macaw.
