My mother was one of the “Gum Tree Ladies” who in the early 60′s stopped the central freeway from going through Glen Park. She threatened to tie her kids to the trees if they attempted to start bulldozing. Thanks Mom!!!!

a detailed account of the Embarcadero freeway– I had never visited when this was still up, but it’s still hard to wrap my head around the fact this once existed…

One day we can only hope they will rebuild the land that 101 cuts through, turning sections of 101 into tunnels like the rainbow tunnel in Sausalito just over the gg bridge. Imagine, just reconnecting Potrero hill east/west… what a difference that would make.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think this freeway movement was spearheaded by our “good planning” think tank SPUR.

Next time you hear SPUR talking about sound planning principles, remember that they once thought building freeways all over San Francisco was a good idea.
