I too have had much luck just looking for signs, but these days any place you see is also listed on Craigslist. Of course on CL you get the added benefit of knowing the price and size without having to call someone’s home phone #.

It is totally a renters market, and there are a ton of options.
But no one seems to have told the landlords this… We’ve come close to signing a contract 3 times in the last 2 weeks, just to have some terrible experience with a crazy landlord. It’s gotten ridiculous.
Today we actually discovered a “no musical instruments” clause on the 3rd page of a lease agreement. We called the landlord and it was non-negotiable. What really pissed me off was that the first thing I told the agent was that we were both musicians looking for a room in which we could play music.

Plus until you walk around the place you won’t know if you really want to live there.

And just from my personal experience, I’ve seen a lot signs up lately.

I found my last 3 apartments that way.

People want to eat here, play here and live here. Who wants to live in the dull north of Market, or the windswept and dreary SOMA? The net effect of this is a steady people-push toward the outer Mission, which will transform in the coming 20 years into a continuum of Inner Mission/Bernal/Noe.
