I just mean that the intensity that some people seem to feel about which team you root for (like all the Yankees hatred) is a little weird, since it's often pretty arbitrary. I get a lot of flack because I root for the Yankees even though I'm from Santa Cruz. Like if I don't root for the team near my birthplace, I'm a poseur. Even though I feel like I have a legitimate reason to root for them.

what's so weird about rooting for a team? is it the team concept or sports in genera that you find wierd? most people root for teams for the same reason(s) you did (family, friends, past experiences).

Well, if you want to get into it, the whole concept of rooting for a team is a little weird. But your simile doesn't work.

I root for the Yankees because my mother's family are big baseball people and they're all die hard Yankee fans. I learned to love baseball from my grandfather, who was born and raised in The Bronx. We would watch games together when I would visit him in New York, both wearing our Yankees caps. When I went to school in NYC, I went to games (sometimes, when I could afford it) and watched them all with my friends.

Both my parents have memories of seeing the old greats play at (the old) Yankee Stadium.

So, I'm not really sure how you think people should pick the team they root for. But for me, this was the meaningful choice.
