Sunday Night Stick Up on 20th/Folsom

Whoa!  Linda writes in about being held up Sunday night:

Me and a coupla pals were on our way home from my bachelor party on Sunday night at about 1 or 1:30am. I of course was lit up like a Christmas tree so the details are a little fuzzy. Long story short – we got robbed at gunpoint at 20th just before Folsom.

My two pals entrusted with my care were pretty sober. At first I thought they were just messing with us so, but then one of the fellas made a tug at my purse and it finally dawned on me what he wanted. Since he hadn’t shown me a gun yet (and I was drunk) I just said, “Man, don’t do that. I’m getting married in a week. Don’t do that.” Mind you this was all slurred and I was standing there covered in BBQ sauce and feathers. I was also holding too much stuff and my bag was slung across my body and not very easy to get at. I was obviously wasting their time.

So they made a grab for my friend’s purse, pulled out a loaded gun, pointed it at me, waved it at the others and then made a run for their car.

It was two dudes, fairly young maybe 19 or 20. One of them was a light skinned Latino. Didn’t get a look at the other. Black late model four door sedan with no plates. Didn’t really look like thugs to me. It was strange.

Thanks for sending in your account, Linda.  Hope you are well and congrats on the wedding!

With all due respect, and I’m sure that was a terrifying experience either way, but how could she possibly know that the gun was loaded? (Of course, when faced with a gun, it’s always best to assume that it is loaded, but still.)

I guess I’m just being pedantic and annoying. I’ll stop. Glad no one got hurt.

  2. lindylula says:

I shoot guns. Have done so since I was 5. We heard a click. It was loaded.

    • Glenparker says:

Was it a revolver or auto?

      • missionrat says:

that is such a retarded question. autos would be for mowing people down, not for a stick up, idiot. second of all, just because they didnt look like thugs doesn’t mean you cant get robbed. its a crime of opportunity and your drunk ass was that opportunity. youre lucky it ended up with you alright. moral of the story: be aware of where you are, sober or not.

      • pete says:

Before you go and call somebody an idiot Missionrat, check your own facts. The question was if the gun was a revolver (with a cylinder that spins around) or an auto(matic). Automatic in this context obviously doesn’t mean a machine gun. From Wikipedia “An “automatic pistol” or an “automatic shotgun” generally refers to a semi-automatic design.

      • missionrat says:

it was a stupid fucking question

  3. Hmmm says:

Another drunk person getting messed with late at night in the Mission… people make themselves targets…

    • Huevo Frito says:

have some fucking respect. All three of us were walking back to our house two blocks away. We weren’t making a scene and we weren’t stumbling. I got to look down the barrel of a gun…loaded or not, its not fun and it’s not something to take lightly. grow the fuck up and have some sympathy asshole.

Also, I’ve lived in this neighboorhood for 9 years and she’s lived here for 13….nothing like this has ever happened. Drunk or not(two of us were sober), we happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

      • henry says:

Yeah, I agree. Not sure what these posters have up their asses. Sounds like you took reasonable precaution. I’m glad you and your friends were not injured.

  4. plumpy says:

Geez, a stunning lack of sympathy. I didn’t mean to start it, sorry.

  5. missionrat says:

there are no stupid questions, only stupid people.

  6. olu says:

“Didn’t really look like thugs to me. It was strange.”

So even the honor students are mugging people now?

  7. what says:

People are more upset at someone who was walking drunk down Folsom than they are at a pair of dudes holding people up at gunpoint.

    lol.

  8. person says:

Scary experience, glad you are okay. Did you report it to the police? If so, please be honest and tell them you were very intoxicated. If there was some kind of identification, i.e. from a photo spread, your mental state would really call into question your ability to make an accurate id. Identifications are very questionable even when people are sober. The point is, a mistaken id will lead to the punishment of the wrong person.

    • Huevo Frito says:

when they take the report they ask whether or not you would be able to ID the suspect, the sober ones said yes, the drunk one said no.

    • LINDYLULA says:

I was the only one drunk. Cut a girl some slack it was my bachelor party.

      I took the precaution of:
      A) Not riding my drunk ass home on my bike
      B) Being escorted by two people who were fairly sober

I wasn’t asking for it, I was just walking home with my pals helping me- as is my god damn god given right. Pardon my French.

Been here for 13 years now. Will continue to walk and ride my bike when I damn well please. Nobody is going to scare me into submission. It was a chance opportunity. The chances of it happening again are slim. I’ve lived and traveled in scarier places than this little town. Trust me. I can handle myself. These things happen.

But god forbid that I should pass along the information so that others might benefit.
Police we flagged down and notified. The two sober ones made the report. You’re welcome assholes.

Just curious, did this happen between Folsom and Treat, or Folsom and Shotwell?

I’ve heard that the gang border is now up and down Folsom instead of along 20th, although there is supposed to be an injunction in place for this area, I thought…

    • Huevo Frito says:

it hapenned between Shotwell and Folsom on 20th…(closer to Shotwell) on the south side of the street.

    • LINDYLULA says:

Thing is, they didn’t look like gang bangers/cholos to me. I thought they were kind a clean cut.
But I will defer to Huevo Frito as he has a clearer idea of what the heck happened.

  10. A friend says:

Linda, I am glad you and your friends were not injured. I know first-hand how scary it is to get held up in the Mission, even when taking reasonable precautions. When it happened to me (22nd bt Valencia & Mission), I and my 2 friends were completely sober and aware. Nothing we could have done and it sounds like there was nothing you could have done either. The people talking tough a)have never been at the wrong end of a gun or b)are scared shitless thinking about what you went through and are acting like internet tough guys (or girls) to compensate or c)unsympathetic dickheads who, in time, will hopefully learn some sensitivity. Congratulations on your wedding!

  11. jimbeam says:

I love the blame the victim thing we’ve got going on here at Mission Mission. It really speaks well to the quality of the people living in the neighborhood.

  12. Shouldnt B. Readingthisblog says:

Same thing happened to me. 15 years ago – that happens in cities, glad you’re OK. In my case they got $2 and we laughed about it(me and the kid with the gun at my head). Don’t look like such a mark next time you’re out that late. I didn’t look like a mark, but these were some tough-ass kids who were selling fake crack.

  13. Jocelyne says:

Blaming the victim seems logical, wtf, you people are heartless bastards. Maybe you need to go through something similar and learn some compassion for your fellow humans. Hopefully IF this ever happens to you, you will be lucky enough to get off as easy as these people did, but I can’t imagine people like you would.

    Congrats on the wedding, lady!!!

  14. Scum says:

My friend and I have a bet going over which one of us lives in a sketchier part of the Mission. We are still working on boundaries though. I think 20th might be a good one. Of course, I’m stuck with 16th St BART station. Having a loaded weapon pointed at you pretty much sucks. I’m gonna make sure not to carry valuables round these parts. I hear tasers are getting cheaper; maybe we can truck one of them around. Frickin Mission…too bad we love it so much.
