Jay's Cheesesteak Finally Gets Vegan Mayo

A tipster informs us the Jay’s Cheesesteak, the best sandwich place in the Mission (sorry, Mission Burger), has finally added vegan mayo to their menu.  No price difference.  Huge taste difference.

Vegan Mayo, wow. I dare any of you to venture 100 miles outside of the BA to a cheap eats joint and try asking for Vegan Mayo. Christ almighty, only in the Mission.

  2. laura says:

Hey! That’s because of my friends! We were eating there last Thursday and asked about vegan mayo and the dude working walked across the street and bought some. Also, if you bring in vegan cheese, they’ll put it on your sandwich and hopefully they’ll start carrying that soon too! What I’m trying to say here is, YOU’RE WELCOME.

ALSO, ugh can’t believe you scooped this MURDER.

  3. Juan says:

I can’t speak to their vegan (cough) options, but Phat Philly’s steaks are superior to Jay’s, and I went to Jay’s for years.

    • SFDoggy says:

I definitely agree; I have switched allegiance to Phat Philly’s even though I have to walk a little but further.

  4. MrEricSir says:

Why would anyone expect a place with the words “cheese” and “steak” in the name to serve anything vegan?

    • foon says:

Probably because they’ve served vegan sandwiches since forever, entirely of their own volition? The real question is “how did they not realize how much better the vegan sandwiches they *already served* got with the addition of vegan mayo?”

  5. loosecharm says:

So if I bring my own weiners to Herbivore , will they slice them up and put them in my tofu scramble?

  6. Cranky Old Mission Guy says:

I bet the vegan mayo is WHITE.

  7. Ted says:

vegan fucking mayo at a cheesesteak place. you fucking hipsters are RUINING san francisco

    • foon says:

Really? Does it make your cheesesteak that much worse if mine has vegan mayo on it? THIS IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS GAY MARRIAGE

      • Matt says:

See, foon, this is what happens when you let enthusiasm press “submit comment” for you. You ask a perfectly valid and good rhetorical question like:

“Does it make your cheesesteak that much worse if mine has vegan mayo on it?”

A good question, valid to the topic and focused. And then you completely fuck it up by saying something ignorant like:

“THIS IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS GAY MARRIAGE”

I get what youre trying to say.. but next time, try to say it with less stupid. You dilute your argument when you dont think your statements through.

      • foon says:

Whoops! Thanks Matt! I’ll definitely try to be less stupid next time!

      • SFDoggy says:

I disagree; because of Foon’s compelling arguments I now support vegan marriage.

      • Jesse says:

I’d say vegan mayo IS LIKE gay marriage…kinda tastes like mayo…er, sorta looks like mayo – but definitely isn’t real mayo. Just soy pretending!

  8. Drew says:

What, exactly, is vegan mayo composed of? I’m very curious. If it tastes like Miracle Whip, count me out.

  9. Erik says:

Anything vegan that isn’t visibly a fruit, vegetable, or fungus is just doctored-up vegetable oil.

    • Joel says:

      What’s salt made of?

      • Erik says:

Right. Make that “…isn’t visibly a fruit, vegetable, fungus, or mineral..”.

      • Joel says:

Is tofu visibly one of those things? I dunno, it seems like a pretty broad generalization. There are lots of soy- and wheat-based products that look more like meat than vegetables, but they’re not wholly or sometimes even in part made of vegetable oil.

    • Matt says:

Im not sure if i can throw myself 100% behind this statement, but i do have to agree, that a lot of processed “vegan” food, much like highly processed “vegetarian” food, is often a nutritional disaster. “Vegetarian” != “vegetables”

  10. Erik says:

Tofu is doctored up vegetable oil.

  11. james says:

the problem i take it is the eggs. i’m mystified as to how eggs make the stuff taste worse. there seems to be a view held by some that ‘vegan” just tastes better. all vegan means is that no animal products were used it’s neutral. most of the time it just means no eggs or no milk. half the time things are labeled vegan I wonder why i would have expected anything else. and then everyone seems to have an exemption for bacon.

  12. Jon z says:

I don’t agree that Jay’s Cheesesteaks has hte best sandwiches in the Mission. They only make one kind of sandwich, it’s kind of soggy. Mr Pickles whips its ass, tortas at El Metate, Pal’s on 24th street! Q.E.D. bitches

  13. Jay says:

How, in the name of holy goat, could someone consider Jay’s Cheesesteaks the “best in the Mission”?! That is – bar none – the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard of since vegan mayo.

Phat Philly, The Sandwich Place (Mission btwn 16th/17th), Mr. Pickles, my god the list of better sandwich places goes on and on…

  14. Isore says:

    All Mayonnaise is gay.

  15. Stan Heller says:

Well, Jay’s is hardly the best chessesteak place in the Mission. That honor goes to Phat Philly’s.

In fact, I would be hesitant to call any place that puts mustard and mayonnaise on a cheese steak a steak joint at all. Absolutely clueless.
