Melrose was once a sort of cool underground street (by LA standards) that slipped below the radar. It got hipper and hipper, then the moneyed hipsters found out about it, and then the merchant class smelled opportunity, and only then did the TV people come up withe Melrose Place.

Point being, to go to Melrose after it had been so exposed was to see a mere shadow of what it once was, a mockery of all that made it cool in the first place. Once you see tasteless, faux ‘edgy’ signs like this advertising cheesy low-rent cafes to 20 somethings, it was a clear sign that Melrose had jumped the shark. I never thought I’d be comparing Valencia to Melrose in my lifetime, but here we are.
