The frat party as No cal aptly termed it only started happening around 1995. Prior to that (at least to my adolescent recollection) it was a still a big party, but alcohol was only a part of it…and not the entire point.

Hum, well, yeah. Bay-To-Breakers was pretty much my introduction to life IN SF, and also to LOVE in SF — many, many years ago — but I wouldn’t miss it for a second if the tradition just dried up and blew away at this point/no point.

YMMV.

Of course, they’ll do it at least once more for the numbers.

Yeah, okay, don’t they claim that every year? I spent about seven seconds googling and found a link (from Brock, duh) from 2009 detailing their new “zero tolerance policy on alcohol” and “no wheeled objects and floats”. Sure, whatever.

They can try. They always do. It’s always scare tactics. I’d be surprised if it doesn’t fall through. Comes down to the fact that the SFPD doesn’t care enough to cite thousands of people. If you were a cop would you want hours of extra paperwork from a single day?

Sure the city is going to get knocked on, but i think a lot of responsibility falls on those that went on a bender and ruined it for the rest of us.

Its kinda like hosting a block party: you don’t mind having strangers walking through your house drinking and having fun, but then you wake up the next morning and your “guests” have pissed all over your upstairs hallway. Of course, when you cancel the party, people think you’re being a jerk because you only have 2 bathrooms at your house.

speaking of gate comments, i like the one that said something like
“Binge drinkers mistake being drunk for being interesting”

the people in the photo sure think they are interesting.
