A 40% increase in tuition over one year deserves a riot, misdirected or not. This is why citizens of France have such a higher quality of life than Americans, they are willing to fight for it.

Granted, many of the actions of student protesters seems immature, or radical or out of control, but honestly, a 40% increase over one year? That is heinous and absolutely unacceptable NO MATTER WHAT the reason. It’s gotta start somewhere.

i think the rage is somewhat misdirected. there may be some administrative bloat in the Cal budget, but you are skipping over dollars to pick up pennies. you could get rid of all the administrative pay and you would barely be able to put a dent in the budget problems. we can really thank Sacramento, and to a lesser extent, the overall War on Education being waged in the USA right now.

gabe, yes, we should pay people what they deserve to work at a UC. of course, all those people should be teachers. no one else. okay, janitors too. but seriously.
the administrative bloat throughout the UC is outta control. as it stands, the ratio is about 1 to 1. that means a manager for every teacher! no way.

the board of regents are jacking up tuition, and then offering loans to more students. and then turn around and sell those loans as private equity. shaaaaaady!

Here’s what’s really going on. The regents pay the top brass what is competitive. That doesn’t add up to much compared to the cost of a football team or a state of the art hospital. The people running these schools could be at stanford or any other big private school. Do you think they take positions at UCs because they are civicly minded? No, they want to be paid what they think they are worth, just like the rest of us. Do you want the U.C. to be expensive and a poorly run school?

Also, many ways the uc school system spends money is good and some is bad. THat has nothing to do with fee increases. Nobody in the universe could balance the budget this year for the U.C. because there was not enough money from the state. We as a state have voted for people and measures that have caused this situation. The money from the state is being given elsewhere. We are privatizing the UC system one legislator at a time.
