Is There Anyplace in San Francisco You Can Get Bread Like This?

Or do you have to go to Europe?

I’ve been looking for this ever since I moved here. It’s like a big pretzel, but in bread or roll form. In Germany they call it “Laugenbrot” and I think it’s “Lye Bread” in English.. It has a base (base as in the opposite of acid) glaze and is awesome. I’ve asked at a few bakeries here but so far, nothing.. They just look at me like I’m “that guy” when I say, “You should have it.. it’s very popular in Europe.”

Actually the only time I had it in SF was on a Lufthansa flight leaving SFO. :)

Anyway, maybe they have it at some German restaurants, Suppenkuche perhaps?

pretzel bread abounds in chicago, so if you’re willing to put up with ice pellets stabbing you in the face while you ride your bike, you can have as much as you want.

Whole Foods on California carries pretzel rolls. Not sure if they bake them or some other company.
