Delano’s Space Might Become ‘Grocery Outlet’

It was reported a couple weeks ago that the old Delano’s space was close to becoming a Fresh & Easy. Now it appears there’s a new possibility. Reader Lisa C. explains:

Heard from Supervisor Campos’ office last week that there are bids in
from two places to lease the building that was Delano’s: a place
called FRESH AND EASY and then one called Grocery Outlet.

They both seem kinda weird but the latter seems less desireable from
what I’ve heard.  Apparently the contact person in the Mayor’s Office
is Lisa Pagan, in the office of workforce / economic development or
something like that.

I wonder when the public hearing is?

Yes, I wonder.

Either way, wouldn’t it be great if they replaced that 1-story building with a mixed use building with several floors of apartments above it, and the waste-of-space surface parking lot with a mini-park?

  2. Sean says:

I wonder what demographic group of the Mission deem “Grocery Outlet” less desirable. Hmm, the working class folk? Probably not.

  3. SFSquee says:

Please, no Grocery Outlet! Somehow I figured the city and BoS would find some way to mess this up.

    • Rusty H says:

There used to be a (popular) Grocery Outlet in the space that’s now the Best Buy. (By space I mean lot, the building was torn down). Grocery Outlet is hit or miss, so great stuff at good prices sometimes, other times kind of scary. I’d prefer a Fresh’n'Easy personally but happy to see a Grocery Outlet there as well.

Too bad Trader Joe’s didn’t bid on it.

  4. BrownGlitter says:

    Grocery Outlet.

    Thinking…Thinking.

Are the foods from last season?

  5. Dima says:

A few weeks ago mission local contacted grocery outlet and they said they had no plans to lease out the space but weren’t ruling it out.

  6. Stuart says:

Grocery Outlet was THE place in midtown Sac to get good, cheap wine. I’ve been hoping they would make it to the city!!

    • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

There used to be one, it was right where Best Buy is now. But I agree, it would be terrific if they opened a new one here.

      • two beers says:

Historians tell us the demise of the Mission began when the old Canned Foods (aka Grocery Outlet) closed.

I hope a new one opens, and chases the grossedoput yuppie foodie snobs out of the neighborhood.

I hear there are vacancies in the Marina.

  7. MrEricSir says:

Castro gets a Mollie Stone’s, so it’s time to be jealous.

  8. Ferocious Foot Odor says:

Gross Outlet. Why? The Mission is evolving wonderfully, no matter what all the haters claim, and something really great could happen with that space. The Gross Outlet is not great. Its dumb.

  9. stiiv says:

Man, I do not want a Grocery Outlet there. But it’s perfect for that spot.

  10. Todd_Lappin says:

    Fresh and Easy please.

  11. AdhesiveEarth says:

Grocery Outlet makes more sense, it is more accessible in price than Fresh & Easy and can cater to a bigger market.

  12. Sarah says:

Why not grocery outlet? An affordable grocery store option for the mission, seems like the appropriate fit for the neighborhood. Fresh and easy on the other seems like it would be much more suited for the east bay or some other suburban market.

  13. Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

holy SHIT! They might open a Gross Out there?! That would be AMAZING! I have missed the SF GrossOut ever since they built Best Buy on top of it.

    • Rusty H says:

Hopefully if it’s a Grocery Outlet, it will be able to sell liquor. The old SF Grocery Outlet had the best deals on booze.

  14. Mark says:

Fresh & Easy has a much better fresh fruit and vegetable/produce section than Grocery Outlet.

    • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

Yes, they do, but as I noted earlier, there are already TONS of places to get great fresh fruit and veggies cheaply in the Mission. This is not something we suffer from a lack of.

      • Sarah says:

        Agreed.

      • ciao says:

you say that as if there isn’t already a bargain bin grocery store in the Mission . . .

      • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

Uh. Where? FoodsCo? Smart and Final? Big Lots? None of them can hold the tiniest of candles to the glory that it is the GrossOut.

Don’t believe me? Go to the one in Berkeley or Oakland.

  15. Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

Also worth noting that Grocery Outlet is a a local company, based out of Berkeley. As opposed to Fresh & Easy, which is owned by Tesco, more or less the British equivalent of WalMart.

  17. alex hyde says:

The Grocery Outlet may be the best in shopping entertainment. We’ve missed it since it left the Mission (and have even been known to cross to bridge to shop at the Berkeley store with a cooler in the car trunk). Sure they have junk, but over the years we’ve gotten excellent deals on wine & liquor, unusual mustard and other condiments, smoked salmon and fine cheeses. We live nearby and the first store we dared hope take over the Delano’s was Grocery Outlet.

  18. Barnett says:

Correction: Walmart already has stores in Britain, under the name Asda/Walmart after the British chain they bought. Tesco was originally a supermarket chain which added non-food departments, and is closer to Safeway, and there are Safeway stores in Britain. These Tesco owned stores however are smaller and pretty well strictly foodstuffs and are part of an expanding food store format in Britain: smaller, more limited range of foods and a fair amount of partially prepared foods, almost ready to heat (quick reheat or raw but microwaveable). Trader joe’s has started to offer these products and in this respect Fresh and Easy has overtones of Ttrader Joe (the major British food chain store Sainsbury’s has developed these smaller outlets over many years–the food is good, but not cheap, and very practical. Maybe we should ask Sainsbury to open up here?

    • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

Walmart bought ASDA about six years ago, if I recall correctly. However, I stand by my earlier analogy, re: Tesco is to Britain what Walmart is to America, in terms of both its utter pervasiveness AND its deleterious effects on local businesses in the areas where it sets up shop.

To be fair, it is not as bad as Walmart when it comes to mistreating its workers, however I suspect that is mostly because they wouldn’t be able to get away with it in the UK.

      • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

Looks like Walmart bought ASDA in 1999, actually.

      • Welsh Bach says:

Tesco now controls over 30% of the grocery market in the UK. In 2010, the supermarket chain announced profits of £3.4bn. Growing evidence indicates that Tesco’s success is partly based on trading practices that are having serious consequences for suppliers, farmers and workers worldwide, local shops and the environment.

Read all about it at http://www.tescopoly.org/

      • t.c. says:

@welsh bach. Quoting the anti tesco league on facebook isn’t exactly the best resource for unbiased info.

My vote is for Fresh & Easy… or a Trader Joe’s.

      • Barnett says:

Well, I do not agree, although Tesco is a major chain, and its newest stores are large and spill over into dry goods, clothing etc. (i.e. it is moving in the direction of Walmart) … and the Walmart/Asda stores more closely follow the newer US Walmart Superstores (the ones with food sections–the older and smaller Walmarts did not sell much if any foodstuffs.

But the Tesco Fresh and Easy, like the Sainsbury Express smaller stores are definitely of better quality, and are almost entirely food strores. They are probably an asset to the local food store scene, but we shall see.

Anyway, there is no fear of getting Walmarts in San Francsico given the current policies regulating new stores.

  19. SCUM says:

They should turn it into a giant beer garden/strip club with male and female strippers for all the kids.

  20. Michael says:

Fresh and Easy would be great. Tesco (owns Fresh and Easy) is a great company. Figures crossed…

    • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

Not sure what Bizarro Universe you’re from where Tesco is a great company, because here in ours it’s a kind of an evil company, a lot like WalMart in its detrimental effects.

  21. Resident says:

Grocery Outlet is AWESOME! Great high quality stuff for super low prices. San Francisco needs stores like this. Some of the stores like the ones in Berkeley and Oakland are great!

  22. grill cheese says:

fresh and easy is a UK owned grocery store that sells pre-packaged to go items and is basically for people that think they are eating healthy when they are not!!

make sure you look @ all of the ingredients in the togo foods, they are LOADED with sodium…and where are they made?

i bought chicken there that wasn’t bad, great price but besides that and a bottle of wine, who cares…eat local produce, local beef, local wine!!!
