fresh and easy is a UK owned grocery store that sells pre-packaged to go items and is basically for people that think they are eating healthy when they are not!!

make sure you look @ all of the ingredients in the togo foods, they are LOADED with sodium…and where are they made?

i bought chicken there that wasn’t bad, great price but besides that and a bottle of wine, who cares…eat local produce, local beef, local wine!!!

Grocery Outlet is AWESOME! Great high quality stuff for super low prices. San Francisco needs stores like this. Some of the stores like the ones in Berkeley and Oakland are great!

Hopefully if it’s a Grocery Outlet, it will be able to sell liquor. The old SF Grocery Outlet had the best deals on booze.

There used to be a (popular) Grocery Outlet in the space that’s now the Best Buy. (By space I mean lot, the building was torn down). Grocery Outlet is hit or miss, so great stuff at good prices sometimes, other times kind of scary. I’d prefer a Fresh’n'Easy personally but happy to see a Grocery Outlet there as well.

Too bad Trader Joe’s didn’t bid on it.

Not sure what Bizarro Universe you’re from where Tesco is a great company, because here in ours it’s a kind of an evil company, a lot like WalMart in its detrimental effects.

Well, I do not agree, although Tesco is a major chain, and its newest stores are large and spill over into dry goods, clothing etc. (i.e. it is moving in the direction of Walmart) … and the Walmart/Asda stores more closely follow the newer US Walmart Superstores (the ones with food sections–the older and smaller Walmarts did not sell much if any foodstuffs.

But the Tesco Fresh and Easy, like the Sainsbury Express smaller stores are definitely of better quality, and are almost entirely food strores. They are probably an asset to the local food store scene, but we shall see.

Anyway, there is no fear of getting Walmarts in San Francsico given the current policies regulating new stores.

Walmart bought ASDA about six years ago, if I recall correctly. However, I stand by my earlier analogy, re: Tesco is to Britain what Walmart is to America, in terms of both its utter pervasiveness AND its deleterious effects on local businesses in the areas where it sets up shop.

To be fair, it is not as bad as Walmart when it comes to mistreating its workers, however I suspect that is mostly because they wouldn’t be able to get away with it in the UK.

Correction: Walmart already has stores in Britain, under the name Asda/Walmart after the British chain they bought. Tesco was originally a supermarket chain which added non-food departments, and is closer to Safeway, and there are Safeway stores in Britain. These Tesco owned stores however are smaller and pretty well strictly foodstuffs and are part of an expanding food store format in Britain: smaller, more limited range of foods and a fair amount of partially prepared foods, almost ready to heat (quick reheat or raw but microwaveable). Trader joe’s has started to offer these products and in this respect Fresh and Easy has overtones of Ttrader Joe (the major British food chain store Sainsbury’s has developed these smaller outlets over many years–the food is good, but not cheap, and very practical. Maybe we should ask Sainsbury to open up here?

The Grocery Outlet may be the best in shopping entertainment. We’ve missed it since it left the Mission (and have even been known to cross to bridge to shop at the Berkeley store with a cooler in the car trunk). Sure they have junk, but over the years we’ve gotten excellent deals on wine & liquor, unusual mustard and other condiments, smoked salmon and fine cheeses. We live nearby and the first store we dared hope take over the Delano’s was Grocery Outlet.
