BREAKING: Many shots fired at El Tin Tan

Shooting at El Tin Tan

I heard something like 20+ shots fired at about 11:00pm. At least three people in the bar shot. Hoping for the best.

UPDATE: 5 victims at El Tin Tan.

UPDATE 2: Pancho Villa’s right door was shattered, but the doorman was unharmed. He was already sweeping up the glass. No deaths at the scene.

UPDATE 3: This is even more troubling when you consider earlier in the day the SF Examiner was reporting that the violence in The Mission had calmed down.

    5 dead? hope not.

  2. Addy says:

5 people taken out of the bar on stretchers. One was taken out quickly and the ambulance sped off. The other four came out more slowly and at least three of them were moving and talking – one shoeless and shirtless w/ a neck brace and the other two with no apparent injury (from 1/2 a block and two stories away)

How sad, I don’t ever remember hearing about shit like this going down there before. I was just reminded of this article in Mission Local about how it’s a hub for new immigrants looking for work: http://missionlocal.org/2009/08/low-key-local-watering-hole-famous-in-mexico/

    • Do you think they can get me a job?

      • Alicia says:

Depends. How do you feel about working under the table for well below minimum wage?

        • Jaime says:

Chale amiga. I know more than a few who are making 100 bucks for 3 hours work. Cleaning flats in the Marina. I know, I know, you’re not going to get rich making $33 hr, but there’s no tax on it so it’s gotta be better than minimum wage, verdad? Clean two or three flats a day, and it looks even better. No benefits though and that sucks. But freelancers of every persuasion know all about that.

        • T.C. says:

It sounds good to them, that’s why they’re here.

I happened to be biking right by the area at the time (about 11:10pm), and it was police and ambulance madness for about 5 blocks in all directions. Never seen so many cop cars and ambulances flying in all different directions with lights and sirens blaring; I momentarily had to get off the road just because I felt like I was going to get run over and couldn’t keep track of which way everything was coming from. My thought was that they were looking for somebody from a shooting because they were literally racing in all different directions. When I got to 16th and Valencia, I would say there were about 8 cop cars, a couple ambulances, and a fire truck all parked on 16th St just east of Valencia. And more were still coming! Jesus.

    What a mess!
A second after I heard the shoots, 2 man running with guns in their hands passed in front of my window, across the street…not less then 5 min. after, the police followed.
How many more people would be killed before the close that place…it makes no sense that such place is open, after so many shootings!
    Only in the Mission!

  6. MrEricSir says:

SFist is reporting one in serious condition, four are in stable condition:

Nice article, thanks for the information.

  8. Pedro says:

This is all very sad. I hope that all injured individuals are recovering.

  9. cliff notes says:

If this happened at a white bar it’d probably make national news.. But.. this isn’t even making top story on the local news sites; just small blurbs on the side.

  10. carlos. says:

o shit yeah i was there last night a little after the shots were fired. way sketchy scene.

“damn those niggas ain’t got no aim, they still alive” – random dude.

  11. SFT says:

Yeah, the City does NOT like to talk about this stuff, bad for tourism. When I was living in the TL a few years back, we had a full-on gang fight outside the apartment, on the corner of Polk & Ellis, stabbings & shootings. About a dozen patrol cars and a couple ambulances & paddy wagons showed up to break it up, took a bunch to jail & a bunch to the hospital. Not a word about it on the TV news or the papers, just like it never happened.

  12. what do you expect? says:

This kind of thing is going to continue to happen in the City when you combine out-of-touch-with-reality “progressive” politics, a lax police force banking on fat pensions, and a revolving door criminal justice system. The fact that this happened a block away from a police station speaks volumes. The silence from Supervisor Campos is deafening. Of course, his plan, despite all of his rhetoric, is to maintain the status quo, and he’s doing a great job.

  13. Huh, missed-out on most of the fun; I was on Hoff just before 11 PM, and the only action was a police cruiser stopped in front of a huge white van, with full lights.

  14. Jack Elliot says:

I love it when this shit happens. All these yuppies think they can just gentrify the place overnight… it must be such a bummer when they figure out they live in the hood.

    • 0101 says:

ACTUALLY THE WACK PART IS THAT IT INTRIGUES THEM CAUSE IT’S OUR RAZA FLASHIN ON EACHOTHER, NOT AT THE WHITE FOLKS. NOT SAYING THEY DESERVE IT, BUT WE ARE DESTROYING OUR OWN COMMUNITIES (THIS GOES FOR NORTHEN AND SOUTHERN CALFORNIA)

      • Pedro says:

I agree with 0101. The issue is deeply seeded and twisted. Communities are being marginalized due to the influx/changes in the economy. Then restaurant jobs/ and jobs in general become more scarce, thus pushes people further underground, and more desperate for any means of getting by. So they turn on each other for the societal scraps that exist. All the while people are still concerned with “OMG THE FUTURE OF DOLORES PARK” instead of trying to pull up the local community.

    • ciao says:

boy today must be your lucky day, people getting shot gave you a chance to stand on your soapbox and share your confused agenda. you “love it” when five people get shot and hospitalized, congrats. what happened is awful, let’s not make this about you . . .

      • 0101 says:

FORREAL, WHATS WITH THE GLORIFICATION OF THE HOOD!? CRIME, VIOLENCE, BROKEN FAMILIES DUE TO DRUG ADDICTION AND/OR POVERTY, AND LIVING AMONGST FEAR AND DEATH ARE NOT FUCKING COOL. YOU ARE A PART OF THE PROBLEM IF YOU ARE JUST ACCEPTING IT AS “ANOTHER DAY IN THE HOOD”

        • Pedro says:

Again, I agree with 0101. It’s twisted to see how the violence has been romanticized. The complexities of the violent swell that’s been created is not a capulet vs montague – novela. It’s NOT a chance to say, “hey, that’s the mission for you”, it’s a time to ask questions about how we can prevent this from happening again – and that solution DOESNT start with “move the problem”.

          • Campos says:

That’s right! We need more programs! Tax-payer funded City budget draining programs! Let’s keep those non-profits flush with cash so they can fund my re-election campaign!

      • Ariel Dovas says:

It’s not “fun” and nobody loves this. Even though we’re on the internet, this is still a real thing that happened and it’s not good for anyone. We all live here and we all have to deal with this. I walk by this corner every day, as do . . . I dunno . . . a couple thousand people? A neighbor of mine hid alongside a building with his two kids as the gunmen ran by. My mom was on her way to Pancho Villa at the time. This is happening to all of us.

        That’s my soapbox.

    • Brillo says:

I think the ones doing the gentrifying are the self-affected bohemian types who are attracted to the idea of living in the “hood” but go to places like Ritual more than El Tin Tan.

    • Ben says:

Yeah man I love it when people get shot so I can feel justified in my anti-gentrification raaaaaaage. Fuck you. 5 people got shot and they sure as shit weren’t the yuppies you’re so eager to hate on.

  15. Seriously, this is getting fucking ridiculous. I remember the days when 24th was the mad sketchy area and now the scariest thing going on on 24th is some electric guitar guy playing really bad Creedence/dad music. My boy and I were walking down 16th at 2am after a movie and I could not believe at how awful and loud it was for a Sunday night. There were several groups yelling shit back and forth at each other and it didn’t seem like regular old street people being crazy and cracked out…it sounded like angry, angry things. It’s just sad, really. Mabes I’m a puss but I preferred staying the night at a friend’s house instead of walking home at 2am last night which is only 2 blocks from where she lives on 16th. And what the fuck about the coverage? I KNOW I SHOULD KNOW BETTER/ACCEPT THAT EVERYTHING SUCKS BUT IM STILL VEDDY ANGRY.

  16. hapster says:

I heard the ruckus. There is a Police Scanner iPhone app (from juicy development) (I think it was free not sure) that lets you hear all the radio chatter. I open it up when I hear sirens in the neighborhood.

  17. MrEricSir says:

It’s a good thing the cops are now hassling Haight St. hobos, I feel so much safer with fewer stoned/drunk people taking a nap on the curb than if we spent our police resources on tracking down violent criminals.

  18. nickelback says:

MOVE TO Oakland (not talking Rockridge or Piedmont), then tell me about hood

    • Ben says:

      oh hey

it’s another guy taking a shooting as an opportunity to thump his chest and show badass he is

      cool
