Waiter, there’s a prepubescent fly in my taco

Anyone else disappointed by the larvae tacos at the SF Street Food Festival this weekend? Totally skimped on the worms.

Whoa? How did they get around the FDA insect supply drama that has plagued La Oaxaquena?

    • MrEricSir says:

Speaking of which, what happened to La Oaxaquena?

    • Monica says:

      Hi,

Don Bugito has been working with the San Francisco Health Department for over eight months in order to use insects raised in California and that are proper for human consumption. The ban at La Oaxaquena was because their chapulines came from Oaxaca and are not aproved by the FDA, our Wax Moth Larvae and Mealworms are aproved by the USA FDA. If you have more questions please email us at info@donbugito.com

      Thanks for your comment.

Is this why they’re closed ’till December…?
They started going really downhill all summer, I don’t get it.

with all the great food in san francisco; who orders this?

  3. EH says:

I think that’s the least food-looking food offered for commercial exchange I’ve ever seen in my sheltered life.

  4. As I have said elsewhere, I took a brief stroll through the crowds and decided my money would be best spent at a restaurant where the food could be digested in a comfortable position, after a less-than-eternity wait. If the people who do this want to continue, they’re going to have to rely on the business of early-20-somethings, or change. Kids and people over 30 won’t put up with this crap. Pretty much like Disneyland.

    • MrEricSir says:

Disneyland has the Fast Pass system. The street food fairs need something like that.

    • Olu says:

In other words, people are going to stop going there because it’s too popular?

      • Ben S says:

It’s not so far from the truth, I think. More along the lines of the tourist/local split – if you never get the chance to enjoy that stuff and it’s what you enjoy, you’ll be willing to put up with a lot more bullshit for the chance to do it.

On the other hand, if you can visit a food truck any day/night of the week, would you want to stand in multiple ~30 minute lines? Probably not.

        • Ben S says:

I guess it’s also worth noting that their attendance is growing substantially from year to year, so at least for a one weekend shindig, there are a lot more of “them” than there are of “us”. I don’t criticize the organizers at all for it, but I live basically at ground zero for that festival and chose to spend the day elsewhere instead.
