Shot in the head (because of a case of mistaken identity)

Mission Local reports:

A 22-year-old cook who had just gotten off work at Hogs and Rock was shot and critically wounded at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday as he stood on San Carlos, just around the corner from the restaurant, witnesses said.

Police are saying that it looks like a case of mistaken identity and they are looking for two male suspects between the ages of 25 and 30.

A witness who lives in the building above Hogs & Rocks said she heard two young men ask the cook, who is also the father of two children, if he was in a gang. “No, no,” the cook responded.

Read on.

UPDATE: Our buddy Wesley was there as well. Here’s what he saw and heard:

I was watching a movie. I hear two gun shots, which were distinctly outside of the movie and sounded very premeditated, with a one second interval between them. I cracked my blinds and saw about five people standing around a body in front of Hog and Rocks, talking about witnesses. It took about a minute for several emergency vehicles (including police cruisers) to come in from every direction. I watch someone do emergency CPR for what felt like close to 15 minutes. Later, a crime scene investigator who had examined the body and the surrounding area walked by my window on the phone and said the gunman walked up to the victim and shot him twice in the head and walked off.

Fuck. How many times have I read that question and response in stories like this since I have been living here? I swear, if someone ever says that to me, I will say, “Yeah, yours, man!” It might buy enough seconds.

Jeez. I slept right through that. Kinda glad I decided to not grab a night cap there.

I just moved from San Carlos. So tragic. His poor family!

  4. Manny says:

    Horrible!

  5. rick says:

Why are the gangsters not afraid to commit such a crime 2 blocks from a police station?…..hmmm maybe because of a lack of ANY fear of any police being around!

  6. 0101 says:

quite honestly the only safe answer is “no man, i dont bang, im a civilian,” but most people dont know to say that, especially if they dont speak english…

I’ve heard a simple “not affiliated” will do.

    • Point #1: I think the witness has already established that saying “no” doesn’t help.

Point #2: A cook who doesn’t speak English will almost certainly know a language that a gang member can understand. Trust another cook about this one.

I’m on San Carlos, too. I heard the shots, but didn’t even look out the window. I’ve lived on this block for a loooong time. It didn’t even occur to me look because I’d heard gunshots for so long…not even being cynical. Just resigned, I guess.

I wish the victim a speedy and full recovery.

This is tragic, 2 blocks from the police station, obviously there is NO fear of the police….hmmmm maybe a little more police presence is needed? please walk in to the police station and demand increased police patrol to our neighborhood to curb this nonsense!

Just a continuation of the Norteno vs. Sureno turf wars, or internal gang politics- which includes propagating a culture of fear in community members. It is a shame that this guy isn’t even involved on the gang lifestyle and got shot, but until the larger community takes stronger steps to denounce gangs and rid them from the community, shit like this is going to keep happening. It has been this way for the past ~20+ years, and probably will continue indefinitely.

Especially when you have tools like supervisor Campos who want to see this kind of thing continue ad infinitum.

      • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

What the hell are you talking about?

        • gaahl says:

Corrupt “politicians” maintaining the status quo because they benefit from it.

          • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

What does that have to do with Campos? I don’t always agree with him, but he is pretty righteous in general. A dependable liberal voice on the Board of Supervisors. I dig him.

          • gaahl says:

I don’t know if you realize this, but the entire board of supervisors is extremely liberal. I will agree that he is indeed dependable. You can depend on him to continue to funnel taxpayer money to his “non-profit” cronies, that’s for sure. Have you ever wondered why he has done nothing about the open-air drug market that operates in his district, hasn’t supported the gang injunctions, or hasn’t cracked down on slumlords?

          • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

There are several good, liberal supervisors, but there are also several more right-wing ones. (Not wingnutty rightwing, but, I suppose, “moderates”)

The only thing that you mention that sounds like a bad thing is not cracking down on slumlords. I haven’t heard about this, can you give me some more details?

Indeed, Indeed. 19th is a dividing line and disputed. There have been other murders there. We call that dreadful Taqueria on Mission, you know the one everyone raves about and has roaches falling from the ceiling into your plato, Taqueria Drive-by. I find it laughable that someone was quoted on Mission Local as saying it was safe there haven’t been any murders in 4 years.

Are you talking about CanCun? That place is awesome. Best veggie burritos in the city, hands down.

        • rick fields says:

that place is rancid. don’t believe the hype and dodge the salmonella.

          • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

No hype, just the finest burritos in the city. I encourage you to stay away, though; the lines will be shorter.

I pray to God that the family can have comfort now. It would be good to gather money for the family and the children of this man and his wife. Maybe I can put a little box in a store with a photo?
