Comments on: How to reclaim public space by building a DIY bench and sitting on it

The poster is subtitled “how to build a bench”, not “how to be an activist.” Is your argument that there are too many benches around? That building benches out of waste materials is a waste of time? I have nothing to do with this poster, but the comments here are surprisingly negative in response to a simple poster encouraging sitting with neighbors.

In your zeal to criticize anything that is not “real activism”, you seem to forget that sometimes people are just trying to make their city a little better in a concrete way.

Criticizing a poster about making benches makes you seem like a real asshole. “Real activism” often works better if you’re not an asshole. Also, “real activism” tends to work better if people know their neighbors. (See poster.)

P.S. This poster mentions reclaiming “public space” not necessarily “parking spaces”.

Yayyyyyy….activism by “reclaiming” public space. You’re such a rebel.

Parked cars in public space are bad. But a lot of other things are a lot worse. Real activism takes on real problems.
