When they closed a couple of years ago it wasn’t so much a case of “going out of business” as it was the two owners wanting to retire after running the PFSH since 1969.

under $10 for steak at a restaurant is pretty cheap, might be why they had trouble staying in business. at the butcher shop a good new york steak can be in the $10 range, to get it prepared at a restaurant with all the fixings for $14 is still a pretty good deal.

$13.75 for a steak dinner with garlic bread, salad and baked potato is still a bargain and a fucking half. It is also in line with the prices at the other working-class steakhouses in SF: Tad’s and the Geneva Steak House.

Right now they are waiving the corkage fee because they haven’t gotten their license yet. Once they are actually selling wine themselves, there will be a $10 Corkage fee, according to the menu.

BTW: Also no corkage fee at the Fog City Diner, just down from Houston’s.

OK, so according to the picture of the menu linked in Bernalwood’s post on PFSH the corkage fee is $10. That’s certainly reasonable, but not good enough to have me travel across the Mission (I’m up by 14th). That said, I’ll probably still try out Palace once.

No, it’s not the same. Before steaks were less $10. Now it’s over $13 and they’re serving a wider selection of American foodz. I liked it when it was simple and cheap.

Any idea what the story is with BYOB? Can I bring my own wine and have them open it without a corkage fee? If so then they can count on a new customer. I’m a huge fan of steak places with no corkage and I think the only other place in the city like that is Hillstone (Houston’s).
