My understanding of false statements charges are since it is illegal to lie to federal agents, if they ask you “so that’s everything that happened?” and you say “yes,” and they find anything that you didn’t mention, you can be charged. I haven’t familiarized myself with the details of our subject’s case, but that’s how low the bar is for that charge, in a nutshell.

“Many people regard her as targeted by the Bush Administration”? I followed the case closely and never, ever heard that even suggested. You must really live on the fringe.

And, while you right that she was convicted of lying during an investigation, that investigation was into insider trading. Her trading activity was suspicious enough that it is reasonable for someone to conclude that she did indeed commit insider trading — even if the SEC took the easy route and just convicted her of lying.

She was not convicted of- or even charged with- insider trading. Her crime was lying during an investigation.

Martha Stewart’s also a well-connected liberal, Democratic contributor and fundraiser who was close to the Clintons before her trial, and many people regard her as targeted by the Bush Administration to prove they were doing something about insider trading.

So while her car may have been doubled-parked in front of your store, she’s still entitled to you getting the facts straight. And was her driver in the car? Still not good, but at least it could be moved.
