How good are the sandwiches at Rhea’s Deli?

Pretty damn good, I guess.

But are they as good as Ike’s?

I tried to go here and got so much attitude from the guy that got in my face and barked “YOU MUST CALL AHEAD, YOU CAN’T COME INSIDE” that i left and went back to Rhea’s where i normally go.

that must have been when it was a hole in the wall on howard. there’s a brick and mortar now on folsom. it’d be worth giving a second chance.

deli board is the most.. the best… the most good…

    wtf, subway. hands down. duh.

  5. TC says:

The sandwiches are well worth the 15-20 minute wait, plus the women that take your orders are cute and don’t have any attitude.

  6. Andy says:

Come on… they just use Boar’s Head meat which is standard in all of NYC. This city is hella starved of good deli’s and people will wait “15-20 minute” for an overpriced fuckin’ deli sandwich. Get real.

    • SFdoggy says:

It is more than just the meat. If all you want is smoked turkey on whole wheat, then no point in going to Rhea’s. But if you want Korean Steak….

And, I never have had to wait more than a few minutes.

    • hicky says:

Andy is correct; NY’s sammitch game is far more advanced than SF’s… having said that, Ike’s and Rhea’s are good options. For those of you still eating burritos, try a damn torta for once- those at La Pinata are pretty solid. But Andy, you know what SF really doesn’t do well? Egg n cheese on a roll. WTF? Not even that hard, just have the right bread (bolillo/roll) and cook and egg with some cheese. SF is the land of far too bready, $4.95 egg sammitches. The bread needs to be flattened and it should cost tops $2.50. Get it together.

      • Andy says:

Agreed. Sandwich game lacking, Burrito game proper. I would like to add that Banh Mi’s in SF are noteworthy.

        • Chris says:

Where would you go? I’m from San Jose, and I’ve yet to find banh mi in the city that comes close to what I can get down there (Huong Lan Sandwich, whaaat?). Any suggestions?

          • hicky says:

Than Tam II on Valencia bw 16/17 has a pretty solid chicken banh mi- houseguests just loved on the ones from Dinosaur but I haven’t messed with those yet. (The Westlake beef porridge at Than Tam is rawsum too)

          • Jeffrey says:

Cafe Bunn Mi is pretty solid.

      • Allan Hough says:

My favorite thing in NY is how you can go into any corner store and get a cheese sandwich for $2 or $2.50 and it is hella good.

        • hicky says:

It’s one of the few things that make that big shopping mall known as NY inhabitable- cheap, reliable sandwiches from the bodegas.

BATMAN VOTES FOR IKE’S as the BEST ! altho rheas do come a close second, now may move up to first after i hear you can get blown from one of them..must revisit rhea’s… :)

  8. timbo says:

Based on what Rhea’s hot peppers do to my mouth, I’m a little tentative about sticking one down my pants.

  9. Chris says:

One day awhile back, I ordered a sandwich from Rhea’s, and they had something like a half hour wait, cause it was gorgeous out and everyone was at the park. Anyway, they asked for my number so they could call me when they were ready. Half hour later, I get a call and hear…

    “Your sandwich awaits…”

And that was it. So even though I’ve only had to wait awhile for my sandwich at Rhea’s once, it was still pretty awesome.

The Sentinel on New Montgomery. Had their spicy pork sandwich today. Waited about 2 minutes for it. Fucking awesome. The Reuben is delicious, too.

Clare’s is pretty great and they deliver for frees in the hood via t.c.b. I go there waaay to much.

  14. Bob Dole says:

Sure beats paying $10 for some damn yuppy grilled cheese sandwich elsewhere in the City….

  15. yrmom says:

rhea’s sucks. too expensive, and they’re always out of the good shit. go to the sandwich place on mission between 16th and 17th. goddamn.

    • Jay says:

+1 – The Sandwich Place (that’s the actual name) is easily superior to Rhea’s and even Ike’s. Nice folks too.

  16. Tiny Tim says:

Highly disappointing Veg. Barbecue: hardly any sauce, raw cole slaw that popped out of the roll.
Veggie chicken drumsticks are not the right shape to fit into a roll. Slice the gluten. Not much else.
Ripoff! Just because they use ACME bread doesn’t make it a great sandwich. Praise ACME, not Rhea’s.
Such hype. Learn to make your own sandwiches. Save your pennies and invest in a sandwich press and a skillet.
