It was thought that BART would lead to more apartment buildings, greater density etc. I don’t think it was racist, but it was definitely a desire to prevent any change to the pastoral setting of Marin. Claims that the GGB couldn’t support BART certainly dampened enthusiam too.

08:30 & 14:30 – leave Alameda
10:08 & 16:05 – leave San Jose
12:00 & 17:57 – arrive Santa Cruz

06:55 & 13:25 – leave Santa Cruz
08:56 & 15:42 – arrive San Jose
10:31 & 17:31 – arrive Alameda

Pretty much two hours to San Jose via Los Gatos, and 3.5 hours from Alameda.

There’s also another line that loops down around Salinas and up through Watsonville that might be a little more practical.

A few years later they blew up the tunnels.

On top of that, with the Golden Gate Bridge District fucking with the load reports for the Bridge, it was too much for the BART board, and they asked Marin to opt out.

On the upside, we may have avoided a bridge collapse at the 50th Anniversary when the bridge was waaaay too overloaded, and Marin is far less like the East Bay than it probably would’ve been.
