Rape suspect currently prowling the Mission

Be on the look out! SFPD needs your help identifying a “person of interest” in a few sexual assault cases that happened along 24th Street as recently as this morning. According to the SFPD:

One incident occurred in November and another on today’s date. In these cases both victims were attacked by a suspect identified as a black male, mid 30’s, 5’9” – 6’00”, medium build last seen wearing a black hoodie, and dark pants.
suspect 2
Both victims were walking in the early morning hours between 3:00 am and 6:30 am. when they were attacked from behind. A struggle ensued and the victims were sexually assaulted and then robbed of their belongings in both incidents. The suspect then fled on foot in an unknown direction with the victims items.

Read on for further details. If you have any tips, please call the anonymous tip line at 415-575-4444 or “Text-a-Tip” at Tip411. Include SFPD in the text.

(Thanks for the tip, Jenny.)

San Francisco Police Make Arrest in Sexual Assault Investigations in the Mission District
      12-007
      Posted Date: 1/6/2012
On January 6, 2012, at 4:30 PM, San Francisco Police arrested a 32 year-old male San Francisco resident in connection with three sexual assaults which occurred in San Francisco’s Mission District. He was taken into custody at Cesar Chavez and Treat Street by members of the Special Victims Unit and Mission Police Station.

During the first incident, which occurred on June 17, 2011, the female victim had been walking on South Van Ness between 24th and 25th Street when she was approached from behind by the suspect and bear hugged prior to being thrown to the ground. The victim was then dragged approximately 60 feet to an area between a vehicle and a residence where she was sexually assaulted and robbed of her property.

In the second incident which occurred on November 18, 2011, the female victim was also violently attacked from behind along the Mission District 24th Street corridor where she was sexually assaulted and robbed.

The third incident occurred on December 8, 2011 in the vicinity of 24th Street and Fair Oaks. In this incident, the female victim was sexually assaulted and robbed.

With the assistance of a tip from a citizen on the anonymous tip line, investigators from the Special Victims Unit were able to identify a person of interest. This person of interest was later connected to physical evidence located at the scene of the incidents.

The suspect was charged with numerous counts of sexual assault, kidnapping and robbery related to the three incidents.

The suspect’s name will be released at a later time due to pending identification matters.

  2. wizzer says:

Not trying to be harsh, but what kind of female is out walking alone at those early morning hours?

    • wizzerisanidiot says:

Cuz some women have to work early, or late, you douche.

How about asking “why do rapists/robbers get to roam free at that hour?”

    • claude zachary says:

Wizzer, are you fucking kidding with that bullshit? You are an asshole.

    • MrEricSir says:

Is there a schedule that shows when certain crimes are acceptable?

    • Christine says:

I do it a lot. It’s finals. I work late. I can’t afford to take cabs. Are you going to blame me instead of the rapist?

I was just walking home from school at 3am yesterday. I guess I got lucky — I was walking up 16th, not 24th. It’s terrifying to think that it could have been me.

    • Ramona says:

I guess her personal bodyguard was sick.

    • sistah says:

think a little, bartenders and barbacks, people trying to earn a living.. your question is really clueless and annoying ..and hello kids after bar scene go to eat late night pizza or burritos-walk to their car at 3am. maybe a girl who got in a fight with her partner and is leaving their place in the mission.. who the fuck cares…you sound like a white washed imbecile

    • redpill says:

This happened in front of my house at 6:30AM.. There was blood everywhere.. Lot’s of people are out at this time of day to make it to work by 8AM down the peninsula you need to leave your house at 6:30. All the busses pick up a half a block away and they start at 4AM.

This was very violent and disgusting act. Regardless of what “kind” of a person this poor woman is.. You know what? Your an idiot…

    • AttF says:

as other posters have mentioned, this is a very irritating perspective that I’ve heard several times recently, esp annoying in a City where things aren’t always on a 9-5 schedule (thank god). Some people work and live a healthy life at a different time than you, Wizzer. As an example, I work days and play music at nights. Lots of times, the show ends by 1/1:30, get paid and load out by 2:15, drop off equipment at studio around 3, drive everyone else home and park around 3:30 and voila….walking home alone between 3:30 and 4.

    • Amos says:

That is not the problem. The problem is that there are rapists on the streets, which is the reflection of a deeper problem – mysogyny and sexism.

      • Amos says:

P.S. I forgot to mention. Wizzer, by implying that a woman would in any way be to blame for this atrocity, reveals a deep defect of character. It is this kind of defect that indirectly supports this kind of violence against women. So, now that I have politely pointed out to you this unconscious, (I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt), defect of character, it would behoov you to examine this very typical flaw. After you’ve educated yourself and remedied your illness, do something beneficial and educate other men of ignorance.

    • wizzerd says:

Bartenders just getting off work, and bakers/other early workers just leaving for early jobs you douche. You think every job is a 9-5? Man, What kind of male is this dumb? Oh wait….

    • jesse says:

      you are sooooooo stupid

    • wizzerthewomanhater says:

Seriously? Is it 2011? You are a dickhead. People like you are the reason heinous crimes like this are not punished more harshly. Some how it was the woman’s fault? Women should be appropriate and only walk down a street they live in with someone holding they’re hand? What the fuck is wrong with you? You backward ass misogynist!

    • LOL good troll says:

Obviously no person of any stripe is to blame for being randomly attacked at any place or time.

Yet, if there’s a moral panic about scary brown rapists,

It’s perfectly appropriate to suggest precaution when walking around late at night. Precaution isn’t “blame” and goes together with appropriate punishment for the offender if/when caught.

Any random guy is 2-4 times more likely to be assaulted or murdered than any random woman. Stranger rape is the rarest form of violent crime. This deserves the same rank on the scale of heinousness as the last shooting in this neighborhood.

    • poorwizzer says:

Wizzer, I feel sorry for any woman in your life. These poor women are getting sexually assaulted and robbed. The fact that the first comment that comes to mind is to blame the victim and not to worry about a loved one, shows the kind of sub-par man you are. You are awful.

I just talked to a police officer and he suggested women take a self defense course and carry a taser gun in their purse. I just purchased pepper spray from safetygirl.com but the officer told me most criminals build a tolerance to pepper spray.

    • Public Citizen says:

Wizzer Where do you live? Do you live in this city and see how many people are out between those hours? There are groups of people who get together and exercise at 5:30 and 6AM before they go to work. There are people who have night shift jobs as many have attested.
I wonder if you are in denial or something about how scary it is to have a fucking sick person going around raping people? Sometimes terrified people say stupid things like you did because they’re terrified of facing the fucking crazy thing that is happening.

    • Wizzer you are a douceh says:

Where the fuck does it say in the article what hours they were out?

And what does it matter? In 2012, your mom could be out on the street after 2am, and no one would think less of her. It’s not the 1890′s anymore. Women can work and vote. And even if they were prostitutes, they are still the victims of brutalities.

      Asshole.

  3. Spike says:

I agree with wizzerisanidiot. Why can’t women be out in the early morning? I guess wizzer never worked a late shift or an early shift, or just wanted to take a walk. Women shouldn’t have to think that being able to walk on a city street at any time is unsafe.

  4. reality check says:

yes, women should be able to walk around whenever they want, but since we don’t live in a perfect, safe world, it’s probably ill advised to go alone late at night.

    • Christine says:

Yeah, because we all live in a perfect world where we can afford to spend $10 on a cab to get home from school/work every night.

  5. I am bitter says:

I leave my apt in the Mission at 5:30am to go work.

I carry pepper spray. It sucks that women have to think about stuff like that when all they’re doing is going to work.

  6. danielle says:

Maybe it would help if the other times when we call the police because of crap happening around here, they came and had a presence, so rapists wouldn’t think it’s ok to go skulking about.

This happened about 6 am RIGHT outside of my home. I usually leave at 5:50 to go work out so I can get back, get my kids to school, and go to work by 7:50.

wizzer – start thinking before you “speak”. What kind of answer were you looking for? A female that is looking to get raped and beaten and leave blood all over my fucking driveway?

  7. Reese says:

This happened at 6:30AM. That is a completely reasonable hour for someone to be heading to the gym, walking their dog, leaving for work, etc.

How did no one hear anything? Jeez. You’d think someone would hear screams or something, in such a residential area.

    • mommy says:

I live a few buildings down from where the attack took place. I was up at 6:30, thanks to my 3 year old. I heard nothing. The first I heard of it was when I left my apartment and saw the cops, blood and crime tape.

  8. scum says:

Carry some form of self defense please.

  9. rod says:

they gotta catch this guy. but when they do, that doesn’t mean the streets will be safe to wander alone in the wee hours; most crime around here is under-reported by the media. i know you SHOULD be able to walk around by yourself any time of day or night without fear, but you gotta be careful out there boys and girls (men are more likely to be attacked then women), crime in the mission is a reality.

  10. Billy Escargot says:

    Vigilante justice!
If anyone in the neighborhood knows who is responsible for the attacks a posse ought to be formed and retaliation should be had against such a heinous individual. The more gruesome the better. People that do this kind of shit are the lowest.

  11. sistah says:

kids are always often shot or stabbed in the mish, plenty of drive by’s and muggings that don’t get reported. fucking gangsta land..san francisco tourism doesn’t want you to know…nortenos and sorenos…so this is never a safe neighborhood. been working bartender hours here for 5 years, i see shit all the time…don’t kid yourself into thinking it is a “safe neighborhood.” now, this fucking rapist needs to be stopped..

  12. AMC says:

Does anyone know what the cross streets were? I live on 24th and would like to know…couldn’t find anything on the SFPD page.

  13. brownmama says:

photo and description matches guy who was aggressively harassing, watching and following me for 10-15 mins on a late night. this was about a week and a half ago, 11pm-ish, near 18th street.

    • nobody says:

brownmama, contact sfpd with your info, that is what reportedly happened prior to his first attack on 24th street (following her for several blocks). any info you can give might help a lot, especially considering the prospect of other security cameras.

      • brownmama says:

thanks, nobody. and mission mission. when i saw this post yesterday i phoned sfpd immediately.

  14. Eyeswideopen says:

I live in direct vicinity of where these crimes occurred. I usually take 24th because of higher foot traffic, it’s just busier in general. I now feel a bit foolish believing that to be any safer than a side street. I’m invested in getting this predator off our streets, everyone else should be too.

  15. thismighthelp says:

AMC – I read that the attack began on 24th near Fair Oaks. That information is coming from a mission parents’ google group so it’s probably accurate.

  16. jgbh says:

the cross streets for at least 2 attacks (happening 1 month and 3 months ago) were at 25th/Hampshire, like right by the 33 stop. I live on the block too, and my roommate saw the crime scene there in november.

  17. Glenparker says:

Arm up boys and girls. The police will not be able to save you.
Gun control: The theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her own pantyhose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound

    • MrEricSir says:

Then it turns out she killed the wrong guy and ends up in jail.

Eyewitnesses are notoriously unreliable, which means if they shoot the “attacker” they will most likely have shot the wrong person.

      • G says:

So we’re expecting police to be everywhere all the time? They have to be on every street corner, every building, all times of day, in every alley? If they can’t then perhaps we can have street cameras, everywhere. On your corner, hell, you could get raped in our own home so lets put a camera in your home too. Let’s watch everyone all the time. Every move.

The police are doing their work. The world and even you city is a big place with lots of bad people that do bad things.

I’m always intrigued by people that want to have freedom and yet be watched 100% of the time. You get what you ask for, you can’t have both.

I have a better idea, carry a gun. That dude better think twice about raping my wife, she’ll blow his damn head off. Which do you think will reduce the number of rapists?

Unfortunately, there are crazy people in the world. Being a father of a daughter and a son, my advice is to be aware, be prepared and depend on yourself…there will never be anyone that cares about you more than you.

It’s either that, or we could always go with the cameras everywhere thing. That would work too. You choose.

        • Public Citizen says:

Good points, its true that in this country people want to be protected by the police, not pay taxes for that protection and want freedom. I agree with you.

      • queenie says:

MrEricSir – eyewitness unreliability is after the fact, silly. not when the event is happening. obviously that is easier to narrow it down. going back out to find your “attacker” and shooting him, yes that would be a problem. I don’t think that’s what the OP meant.

      • Public Citizen says:

If a guy is trying to rape me and I shoot him, he is not the wrong guy. What the fuck are you saying?

  18. Glenparker says:

A man tries to rape a woman and she pulls out her pistol and shoots him and it’s the wrong guy? She shoots somebody standing next to the rapist? Let’s see your statistics to back up your claim of a rape victim killing an innocent bystander more often (or in your words, “most likely”) than the man actually raping her.

    • Public Citizen says:

If somebody is being raped with a bystander standing next to the rapists that is an interesting scenario. I think that one is called a gang rape and all the fuckers standing by doing nothing to help rescue her should be shot.

  19. yes says:

i remember when i was a kid there was a neighborhood watch program where i lived.
why isn’t there one in the mission now?
people can and should look out for each other.

  20. Alessandra says:

we should be able to walk any time, with no problem..

    • Glenparker says:

Yea, good luck with that. The cold reality is is there are people out there who will rape you or murder you no matter how much you may wish it wasnt so.

  21. wisewoman says:

I think that the idea of a watch group is a GREAT IDEA! This could bring the community together and make for a safer world. It would be great if all communities did this. We could all help each other!

  22. Nicholas O'Neill says:

A Neighborhood Watch/ Community Watch is exactly what the Mission needs – not just for the foul rapist currently at large and all other such criminals, but the reality is that we live in a gang-infested neighborhood – I DESPISE THESE GANGS (I guess who doesn’t, other than their membership &, often extended families)….I have seen so much intimidation, harassment and violence from these cowards….I’m from Dublin Ireland and we had a BIG heroin problem (epidemic) back in the ’80′s. In the end, it was a grass-roots movement of citizens who took back the streets – successfully. Not vigilantes. Just a large movement of ordinary folks (led by mothers, as usual!) who got it going. We need to rid our hood of these bully/criminals, for good. Is there anything out there yet that can be grown into a movement for ALL etnicities/income groups? Sorry if I sound naive – just really frustrated by my sense of powerlessness…any suggestions folds?

  23. boobookitty says:

My heart goes out to the victims. I live in this neighborhood and it troubles me that worthless pieces of shit like this are roaming the streets and raping our women. People like this deserve a long and painful death for committing such atrocious acts. The fact of the matter is that these types of things happen everywhere, but unfortunately violent acts like this tend to happen more in our neighborhood. I feel this is slowly changing as gentrification takes place but it will be a long time before the hood aspect is gone. Even then it is never safe – and some folks think that no matter how many condos and fancy restaurants go in that it will still be the hood. Please consider always carrying some form of self defense with you at all times, especially during this morning hours. It could be the best decision ever made.

  24. Get involved says:

The Neighborhood Watch is a terrific idea because they do work. The SFPD helps coordinates these and there are already a few in the Mission. Here’s the info: http://sfsafe.org/services/neighborhood-watch/watch-group-maps/. I hope one or more of you pursue it (I’m in Bernal but shop and work in the Mission).

  25. angry says:

I was intercepted and walked home by someone I had hung out with once before in February. I was raped and assaulted by this person and did not file a report at the time because I (thought I) knew him. I was walking home after midnight, from 20th and Mission to 25th and Valencia. This person still lives and works in the neighborhood. He is not african american, and no one’s sidewalk was bloodied, but he got away with a crime because I did not comprehend how these things went together. I have record of an ER visit and exam, with proof of assault, and am considering filing a belated report with the police. Neighborhood watch groups seem very necessary in a small city, that is not operating businesses 24/7 in this neighborhood. Rural and suburban communities have neighborhood watch groups. City blocks without businesses awake and/or police on foot/car patrol need them too.

    • queenie says:

please file the report and get him out of the area.

    • poorwizzer says:

      Please file a report.
For all of us, girls, in the mission.

    • jen says:

Please, Please, Please, for the love of God, file a report immediately. It is not too late and will hopefully aid in the apprehension of that monster. I am so very sorry that you went through such a heinous, vile experience. My thoughts are with you. Good luck and happy, healthy life from this point forward.

  26. Horrified says:

Dear Angry, I am SO sorry to hear this. I had a similar situation happen to me when I was 15 (am now 33) years old and did not press charges. The fact that I didn’t still haunts me as I worry about the other girls and women he went on to rape. If you can find the strength (and the fact that you’re still here says how strong you are), do it for you and do it for all other women who will become this monster’s victims if he isn’t stopped. Good thoughts and strength to you always.

You guys know this is a BS post right? There were sexual assaults in the 24th/Fairoaks area, but not rape and no broken necks. SFPD would not hold back on information that might put other women in harms way, just so the rapist would hit again by breaking another woman’s neck? It is not even logical to do that! MO is not the only thing that solves crimes, it’s used to link evidence/intel.

Anyways, it’s disturbing that someone finds this bogus mis-information funny! It’s not. Here is the information directly from SFPD on the Fairoaks area:

Yikes, many of these comments are show how creepy/weird/inappropriate people get when the crime is rape. How about we just frame this as what it actually is — a violent psycho physically assaulting what appear to be total strangers on the street, leaving more than one in a coma?

*Everyone* should be alert and careful when walking around a large city at night, regardless of their gender, why they are out at that hour, and whether or not we happen to know about someone violent on the loose at the time.

The Fair Oaks Neighborhood association is hosting a candle light vigil this Wed. at the corner of 24th and Fair Oaks. A few different times have been mentioned (6pm, 7:30pm). Decision still needs to be made. I will update here when I know more. If you come, please bring a candle (and perhaps some sage?). We want to reclaim our neighborhood. We will be on the corner of 24th and Fair Oaks.

Also, the police department is delivering cards to the victim as they come in. Our goal is to get her at least 100 cards. Bring them to the vigil as well.

Hey sf, thanks for the update and Fair Oaks Resident, thanks for the info. Thanks to everyone who commented, actually. Nice to see people getting involved. I will repost on other thread. Glad they are having a Vigil in Fair Oaks. Sending cards to the victim thru Sf police and FONA is great. This woman needs a lot of support right now. <3 Om~

I’ve lived around 24th for decades and no rape has happened that I know of..we did have some gang shootings, but even the gangs hanging out never did that stuff around here. 24th is a nice neighborhood. But some ghetto ass people messes up the culture in the neighborhood. This guy must be new to the area.

There’s a housing or apartment in 24th and Potrero..that grey big building…,a low-income housing around Bryant St…oh..and the housings around the Potrero hill..maybe he’s around there..
