Spork is closing; hopefully they turn it into a KFC

Got an IM from my buddy Josh:

Sent at 4:16 PM on Tuesday

where’s this news?
Josh: EVERYWHERE
http://www.tablehopper.com/chatterbox/spork-in-the-mission-closing-this-friday-after-a-five-year-run/
how about a drive through kfc in the shape of a chicken leg
i remember it
used to stink up valencia
air was greasy
Sent at 4:20 PM on Tuesday
me: yeah, hopefully they just demolish that ugly building
also i quote you on this topic?
can i*
Josh: what is the quote
yes why not
you pick the quote
how about a drive through KFC shaped like the Colonel
right through the legs

That Tablehopper link delivers some bittersweet news:

If you recall, the building is slated to be demolished and turned into condos in the near future, so it doesn’t look likely that anyone will move into the space.

Condos! Yay! Read on for a statement from the Spork owners.

Yeah, I hope it’ll become a KFC too: Kondos. For. Cheap.

  2. tc says:

Hells yeah for a new KFC.

I hate driving my escalade down to 14 and D to get my KFC bowl o’ chicken, bacon, gravy and cheese. I would much rather valet park on Valencia or better yet leave my ‘lade running in the bike lane while I run in.

  3. Whom ever wrote this is an ASSHOLE!!!!! Spork is rad and and it’s truly so sad they are closing!!! Bruce and Neil are such nice and hard working people. They have contributed so much to our community! They poured they heart and soul into this space. I love what they did and I will miss them dearly! It’s sad to see such a cool spot be gone do to condo’s. Valencia is turning into the Marina!!!!

They may be great people, I have no idea, but you really think that a $14 hamburger is emblematic of the old Mission?

      • Melissa says:

        $14? try $18

      • Max Schaefer says:

We don’t live in emblem of the Old Mission. We live in the new Mission where we like nice restaurants mixed in with the old stuff. Spork was good and a fine addition to the neighborhood.

    • SFdoggy says:

The proposed plan for condos includes having a ground floor restaurant.

In any case, the statement that it will be turned into condos in the near future is not accurate. The developer has been told by the Planning Commission that he needs to scale back his plans and make the building fit in with the neighborhood. But, oddly, he refuses to change his approach.

      • jbanoze says:

They’re ‘possed to be rentals actually, including affordable units mandated by the City. Planning seems to be on board with the density and height, it’s affluent home owners on “Millionaire Row” (Hill St.) that are bitching. No doubt worried about their re-fi s, should any little, brown people move in next door.

    • Brillo says:

Spork is backing out voluntarily. The condo building will have retail/restaurant space on the ground floor and Spork had rights to move into the new building when it’s completed. Who knows, maybe they’ll return with something new.

    • rod says:

it’s weird to speak in defense of Spork and then complain about Valencia turning into the Marina. if Spork had opened in the Marina they probably would have fared better.

i hope whoever buys the space opens an affordable neighborhood restaurant that doesn’t serve pizza or burritos.

      • Michael Donk says:

Here, here. People want good food, not simply the finest ingredients all the time. There are plenty of other places in the Mission where $50 will feed 4-5 people, not two.

  4. scum says:

    Spork you all.

  5. Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

Oh great, more horrible condos? Just what we fucking need.

    • Michael Donk says:

San Francisco is attempting to spread out increased densities. SF currently only averages 15,000pp/sq mi, that number should be around 30,000. Neighborhoods of 4-5 story buildings are still quaint; look at NY’s West Village.

      • scum says:

The infrastructure can’t support the people that are already here and you want to double it. You are an idiot.

      • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

As I have noted elsewhere, I don’t have a problem with increased density or new building. I have a problem with the horrible, poorly-built, soulless boxes that seem to be popping up in the Mission lately.

        • David says:

Hear hear. If there’s gonna be a resto on the ground level, it’ll probably wind up looking like the cheese(y) place in the bottom of that condo building on Valencia between 18th and 19th. That block (now featuring Tacolicious!) has gone so far this way it’s frightening. Doesn’t feel like the same street.

  6. beartrash says:

If a new KFC ever opened anywhere in SF, I’d be amazed.

SF bemoans not having cheap dining options and are hostile towards any fast food chains that open up in certain neighborhoods (e.g. the Castro, the Mission, Russian Hill, Pacific Heights, etc), but no one seems to realize how those two desires conflict.

    • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

Who complains about lack of cheap places to eat?! I have never heard anyone make that complaint. SF is a wonderfully cheap place to eat out. Full of cheap mexican, chinese, vietnamese, diner places, etc.

  7. Spooked says:

Why do little people have such a right to live here more than others? Can’t afford it? Go to Daly City! SF isn’t a fucking refugee camp for homeless and illegal immigrants. Deal with it or get the fuck out!
