They’re ‘possed to be rentals actually, including affordable units mandated by the City. Planning seems to be on board with the density and height, it’s affluent home owners on “Millionaire Row” (Hill St.) that are bitching. No doubt worried about their re-fi s, should any little, brown people move in next door.

Who complains about lack of cheap places to eat?! I have never heard anyone make that complaint. SF is a wonderfully cheap place to eat out. Full of cheap mexican, chinese, vietnamese, diner places, etc.

If a new KFC ever opened anywhere in SF, I’d be amazed.

SF bemoans not having cheap dining options and are hostile towards any fast food chains that open up in certain neighborhoods (e.g. the Castro, the Mission, Russian Hill, Pacific Heights, etc), but no one seems to realize how those two desires conflict.

Hear hear. If there’s gonna be a resto on the ground level, it’ll probably wind up looking like the cheese(y) place in the bottom of that condo building on Valencia between 18th and 19th. That block (now featuring Tacolicious!) has gone so far this way it’s frightening. Doesn’t feel like the same street.

As I have noted elsewhere, I don’t have a problem with increased density or new building. I have a problem with the horrible, poorly-built, soulless boxes that seem to be popping up in the Mission lately.

San Francisco is attempting to spread out increased densities. SF currently only averages 15,000pp/sq mi, that number should be around 30,000. Neighborhoods of 4-5 story buildings are still quaint; look at NY’s West Village.

it’s weird to speak in defense of Spork and then complain about Valencia turning into the Marina. if Spork had opened in the Marina they probably would have fared better.

i hope whoever buys the space opens an affordable neighborhood restaurant that doesn’t serve pizza or burritos.

Spork is backing out voluntarily. The condo building will have retail/restaurant space on the ground floor and Spork had rights to move into the new building when it’s completed. Who knows, maybe they’ll return with something new.
