Hi Andy, the wheels, wiring harnesses and brake levers come from China, the variator assembly comes from Taiwan. The body is still made of steel but there are some plastic trim pieces. The gas tank, glovebox and handlebar covers are plastic because they need to be, other pieces are plastic most likely to save money. Vespa assembly still takes place in Italy at the Pontedera factory.

I think it's kinda hilarious that the vespisti website has a huge graphic of what looks like a 1968-69 Vespa GS, one of the most-wanted and collectible of all the classic Vespas, and then on their policy page, they state: "we do not service the following- vintage vespa scooters, mopeds, piaggio mp3, piaggio bv, piaggio x9."

Yes, the guy runs a Vespa repair shop out of his garage:

http://www.vespistisf.com/

He also has a nice Fiat (I think) tucked in the garage. Seems like a nice enough guy. I chat with him about my motorcycles and it seems as if he is doing more and more business over the months so I suppose he is OK. The folks on Yelp seem to like him:
