I was just mugged on Thursday night (the 19th) around 8pm right in front of Pauline’s pizza on 14th and Valencia. I was talking on the phone and a dude with a hoodie on ran up from behind me and punched me in the face and stole my phone. Same guy? Seems likely since the dude that hit me was also a younger, 5’8″, black man with a hood on.

If you’re really asking the question, my opinion would be to look at the root causes, such as institutionalized racism and the cultural cycles that enforce it. See comments on this site by people who are perfectly comfortable pre-judging young black men they see on the street – people being assumed to be criminal by both police and civilians, with less opportunity than those around them – how long till they begin to act as they are expected to? I’ve seen many affective examples of intervention, stepping in to a young person’s life before they get caught up in the cycle of violence, diverting their path to a positive one, which is proof to me that it is truly a cycle and not a race-specific epidemic.

A black guy in a black hoodie – wow say it ain’t so. So fucking typical these days. Would I be mistaken to say that blacks commit far more crime than any other segment of the populace? Why is this so? What about the culture of violence is so appealing to black men from the time they’re teens to adults (Mission rapist)?

always keep an eye out for someone getting too close to you when you are walking alone. if there’s no one else on the sidewalk there’s no reason for anyone to be invading your personal space. thugs come in all forms, but most of the ones around here seem to be wearing black hoodies and baggie jeans.

if you hear someone following behind you, turn around and take a look. if it looks like someone you don’t want following you, go ahead and cross the street, even if it’s un-PC to do so. if the person follows you across the street, start running.
