Jacked-up house

15th and Dolores.

Seeing stuff like this makes me wonder how houses don’t just fall over all the time.

Happens quite a bit in my neighborhood down here in Southern California. Mostly people having their foundations redone or basements dug out. It’s pretty crazy to see for sure.

TELL JACK what I came here for….

It warms the cockles of my heart to see someone that cares enough about their old house to actually do this instead of just tearing it down and putting up some horrible monstrosity in its place.

FWIW, the owners originally planned to demolish this building and replace it with a large condo box, but the city forced them to remodel it instead.

Nice! This is the kind of thing that I love about San Francisco!

Now save the gold dust lounge.

        • frommycolddeadhand says:

Really? You love the City telling people what to do with their own property?

Don’t buy an historic home if you want to tear it down.

          • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

Yup, I sure do, when what is done with that property has an effect on the world around it. I am strongly in favor of effective historic preservation laws.

It’s called “living in a society.” Deal with it.

          • frommycolddeadhand says:

Really? You have a pretty warped definition of “society”.

          • MrEricSir says:

Yeah, it’s certainly “warped” to be against anarchy.

          • frommycolddeadhand says:

Seriously? Now you’re going to pull out the tried and true “anarchy” argument? How convenient. It seems that most people around here that use this type of argument are transplants, but they also want Halloween in the Castro to return to its former glory and same with Bay to Breakers etc. You can’t have it both ways. Pick a side and stay on it. I think your jealousy/hatred of property owners is really what is informing your “argument” more than anything.

          • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

Huh. So…. you read “Property Owners have a Responsibility to the community they reside in” as hatred/jealousy? That *IS* pretty warped. You remind me of that glenparker troll who used to lurk around here spouting craziness.

frommycolddeadhand, it’s time to get back on the meds.

MrEricSir, it’s time for you to stop posting comments on every blog known to man.

HDPDV, you are one to talk about “warped”.

          • MrEricSir says:

Time to grow up, dude. Maturity isn’t something to run away from.

            Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Uh huh.

Actually what’s happening is a developer is building 13 condos in the vacant part of the lot and renovating the building jacked up here. It was the subject of a lot of haggling with the planning commission and some people did think the new proposal was a monstrosity. Some possibly outdated renderings of what it’ll look like here: http://www.socketsite.com/archives/2009/09/designs_for_200_dolores_now_six_years_in_the_making_and.html

  5. emly says:

Or maybe they are just “installing” a garage?

  6. Jack Walker says:

There was a beautiful church next door and I think this house was the rectory. The church burned down. For awhile the vacant lot was a little park with the steeple sitting in the center.
