In short, fuck you Muni

Tumblr user woolfshirt has been impacted by Muni’s rerouting of buses onto SVN:

If you live in the Mission, you’ll also know that they’ve temporarily rerouted the 14 (and the more benign 48) to a mostly residential strip of South Van Ness. One of the stops happens to be right in front of my door. My stoop is now a bus stop. I didn’t think this would bother me until the Popeye’s bags, melted popsicles and cans of King Cobra started showing up on my stairs. Next, we found empty wallets and purses. A few weeks later, a crack smoker decided to take up residence on our stoop. And lately, some creeper* has taken it upon himself to sit on our steps as he waits for his morning ride and make disgusting comments as I’m leaving my apartment.

[...]

So in short, fuck you Muni. Fuck you litterbugs. Fuck you creeper. Fuck you purse snatchers. I know this bullshit is temporary, but I’m soooo tired of it and I needed to vent.

Read on for further details and a relevant photo.

  1. Class Warfare says:

Great excerpt from “My First Poors”.

    • GinGin says:

Oh geez, get off your high horse. I love where I live and it sucks to smell crack and human feces and be subjected to sexual harassment when I walk outside. I’ve lived here for six years and it has never been like this. This has nothing to do with “class warfare,” and everything to do with Muni sucking.

      • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

How, exactly, is this Muni’s fault?

        • GinGin says:

Because I was having a bad day, came home to a bunch of garbage on my steps and wanted to rant in my personal blog and needed something to blame?

          • Class Warfare says:

The “questionable people” that the 14 attracts which makes it the “worst” are the ones littering and harassing you right? Having ridden the 14 and seen the demographic that rides it, the inference you’re making is. Pretty. Clear.

I’m sorry that your life has been made more difficult while they repair the broke ass Mission streets, and it sucks that it has put you in contact with a population that you probably never spend anytime near.

It’s your blog. You can rant away. What is happening probably sucks. But to pretend that it’s not about your interaction with poor brown people is insulting.

          • Class Warfare Enlightend Way of Thinking says:

” Oh man, this girl, who’s ethnicity, financial standing & residence history I know next to nothing about, just referred to a selection of people who ride the 14 as “questionable.” Clearly she means Mexicans, as they are the ONLY people who ride the 14 bus, and ,as someone who lives at 22nd & South Van Ness, she’s probably never even SEEN a “poor, brown person”, let alone had to interact with them on a daily basis.”

          • Mouse says:

@class warfare, the 14 is one of the worse lines in the city. It’s where busses go to die.

        • Allan Hough says:

Basically I’m always on the lookout for an excuse to have “fuck you Muni” in a headline. Thanks, Gin!

      • Satellite says:

Yeah, and that’s exactly why you included the completely non-loaded examples of “Popeye’s bags and King Cobra” which are most assuredly not intended to conjure up a particular socioeconomic and racial profile. No way. That definitely can’t be the case.

        • GinGin says:

Popeye’s is the closest restaurant to me? You’re trying too hard.

          • ptp says:

You don’t really have to “try” to identify racism unless you’ve spent your entire life convincing yourself you’re incapable of it.

          • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

I don’t think there’s anything loaded in mentioned Popeye’s. It’s a fast food joint that uses a lot of packaging.

        • Mouse says:

What if that’s what’s now on the ground outside the apartment? What if it’s not a loaded example and just a regular example?

    • GinGin says:

Also way to equate crime, sexual harassment and littering with poor people. Yr so enlightened~

    • GinGin says:

It is insulting to write these comments from your brand new Macbook Pro under the handle “Class Warfare.” JK!

The creeper and the crack smoker are both white, FYI.

  2. Nick says:

Agreed, it totally sucks. There were a few people smoking crack last week, a huge pile of human feces left on the sidewalk, and three bikes have been stolen by people breaking into my yard since the change.

  3. JL says:

Raise the price of MUNI to $10 a ride. We’d have nicer buses and less degenerates.

    • GG says:

Or better yet, levy a $30,000 per year tax to live within SF, or a $200/day toll to enter the city. That would get rid of the crack-smokers and ensure the only crimes we have to worry about are date rapes by bros hanging out at Medjool. (Sadly, I feel I have to point out that I am being facetious here).

  4. Kenny Powers says:

I got to tell you, I thought the blacks in Baltimore were bad, but turns out they’re nothing compared to these fags you got in San Francisco.

  5. no.thanks. says:

i cant even begin to feel your pain. i’ve been dealing with this shit (literally shit) on my stoop for years now. be safe and dont be afraid to speak up about the trash.

  6. MIke says:

That sucks, but you’re blaming Muni? Blame the city for making it more likely for garbage and crackheads to exist.

  7. henri! says:

Do you have a recurring role on Girls by chance?

  8. Satellite says:

a good number of people already live next to bus stops and don’t write a bunch of crypto-racist shit about it

    • SFdoggy says:

A good number of people are able to discuss urban problems without making baseless accusations of racism. Unfortunately, there are those who need to flaunt their moral superiority by slandering others.

  9. Jim says:

move to a quiet suburb. the city isn’t for you.

  10. gregory says:

here’s a novel idea: join our neighborhood group so you can do more than vent! email me at cappand20@gmail.com

  11. JL says:

Human feces can be a biohazard. Tolerating it is not something to be proud of. HIV and Hepatitis C can be found in shit with blood in it.

Call 311, the city is obligated to clean it up within 12-24 hours.

  12. Hater says:

Waaa! It’s so hard living in The City! Why can’t it be more like the squeeky clean suburbs I grew up in.

  13. Matt says:

Man, all these comments accusing this girl of inferred racism sure are racist.

  14. Jules says:

The litter, shit, and delusional screamers camped outside has increased on Shotwell too.

  15. Joe Wiley says:

You wanted to live in a city, deal.

    • lol says:

man i love all these transplants tripping all over themselves to prove how authentic they are for being down with shitting on the sidewalk, littering, and sexual harassment. keep on keepin it real guys!

protip: people who actually care about their neighborhood as more than a badge of hipster pride aren’t really lining up to support these things

      • Joe Wiley says:

Uh, I Grew up in the Mission. It’s always been this way, actually this is nice compared to how it used to be. It’s a city, it comes with all types, even type like you.

      • Max says:

I, too, was unaware that being progressive and non-racist means you like shit on your stoop along with crackheads and creeps.

Guess what, hipsters? Those things suck. It sucks to have your shit stolen. It sucks to have someone’s dinner garbage at your front door. Disliking those things doesn’t make you racist or a Republican.

        • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

          Hear, Hear.

        • D. Jon Moutarde says:

Doesn’t make you a yuppie or a gentrifier, either, for that matter.

If you think otherwise, then you may be a tool of The Man.

  16. S.lopez says:

and I was thinking Mission street seemed nicer without the 14 muni only to see the problem has moved to south van ness… sad to say its some of the people that ride the 14 muni. I grew up on capp street and moved back 6 years ago and even as a kid I never rode the 14 muni .. too many degenerates. And please dont start with the race/class comments. My grandparents were mexican migrant farmworkers who worked their behinds off to make a better life for their grandkids. Degenerates come in all colors and class but bottom line is what as a society we should deem acceptable behavior for a peaceful and safe community for all.

  17. scum says:

The 14 has always been a ghetto ass bus line with a lot of trashy people on it. And before anyone gets bent out of shape remember trash comes in all colors. BTW, this peckerwood loves Popeye’s and malt liquor.

  18. chadwick says:

pretty sure this was off a personal blog …that being said….I hate Muni, I hate Popeye’s, fuck Capp and 20th, and I’m def a racist…..so fuck all of you

  19. Lindsey says:

let’s be real, if someone posted something about how enjoyable, peaceful, and serene they find the 14 to be, everyone would be jumping on their case as well.

  20. lurkskatesf says:

see y’all @ da next popeye’s/king cobra party

  21. Pop Weasel says:

Re. blaming Muni: You can blame Muni for a “Broken Windows” effect where sexual harassment and filth are allowed on vehicles and in stations, which then sends a message that it’s also o.k. to use San Francisco residents’ stoops as bathrooms/crack dens/trash heaps because no one is paying attention or cares. Muni recently received a C rating from the City Services Auditor, so I think it’s fair to say that their level of cleanliness and safety isn’t exactly discouraging purse snatchers, drug users and cat callers.

Re. the accusations of racism: Look at post-Giuliani New York. You can have diverse neighborhoods that are vibrant, not Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome post-apocalyptic. You’re the racist if you think otherwise. I am sorry, but all of the liberal white girl guilt in the world won’t make me accept walking through human feces every morning while some drunk guy screams that he wants to sodomize me (this used to be a daily part of exiting my old Muni stop in the Tenderloin).

    • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

I’ll take shit and litter over a Giuliani police state anyday.

HAPPILY, however, those are not our only two options.

  22. FUWeasel says:

Hey Pop Weasel, Newsflash both Giuliani and Broken Windows theories are pretty racist. You can not think about crime and deviance as separate from a social system that divests from and criminalizes some while accumulating for others. Go read a fucking book: Policing the Crisis, Stewart Hall.

    Seacrest out!

    • Pop Weasel says:

It’s completely naïve of you to think that just because I disagree with some second rate cultural theorist’s hypothesis that I haven’t heard of him. You must be a really literate neo-Marxist if you can’t think of a better way to rebut me than to tell me to F off. We can argue about unfair enforcement and sentencing for crimes disproportionately committed by certain minority groups, but bottom line, I am not o.k. with public health hazards and daily implicit threats of rape.

  23. SVN says:

I too live on SVN. The litter has increased so much since the buses rerouted, and there’s nothing elitist about wanting to come home to a clean stoop without random people hanging out on it. I think most people (rich, poor, white, brown, whatever) would prefer to have less litter. I mean, no one actually likes to have trash all over the street! Not even hipsters.

  24. no.thanks. says:

IM GOING TO PEE PEE IN EVERYBODYS FUCK DAMN COCA COLA.

TAKE THAT AND HAVE A HEART ATTACK. I AM HERCULES. BITCHES, I AM HERCULES.

  25. mae ann says:

i live on 22nd and capp and i concede with this post.

  26. kyle says:

i actually called muni about this very thing. when i first saw the 14 stop go in front of my south van ness home i turned to my neighbor and said “really?” my immediate thought was “oh fuck, now there’s gonna be a lot of cops on this street,” and i hate cops. fortunately, i haven’t seen a cop cruise down svn since. but yeah, lotso people smoking crack and miscreants (dearest satellite, i’m sorry if this sounds racist to you, since you think every minority is a miscreant/cracksmoker, and while i’m at it, do you know how terrible crack smoke smells?) sitting on my front stoop (and wouldya know?!!! of every race!!!! i’m sorry if this fucks up your world view, dear fragile satellite, you blessed little thing), and 600% more human feces (i did the math). these are things i should/shouldn’t accept down at work by 6th and mission (or anywhere else in the world but are there because of our fucking marginalization of the disenfranchised), but don’t really wanna deal with at home (hey, a kid wants peace and quiet sometimes), which is why, you know, i rented a place that was not on the 14 line. i know the stop’s temporary, and can’t wait for it to pass.

if i were a female however, this is a big deal. consider being threatened verbally every time you go in and out of your house. in and out of the home you’ve lived in for what the author says 6 years; because at that point you call it home, regardless of where you grew up (yeah, i know the author and she grew up in oakland, dead bodies in the parking lot and all, take that, stupid fucks). the place that used to be safe-ish. that’s what girls have to deal with in the “city.” consider when the cat-calling gets to you and you blog about it, some alpha-male who reads blogs at 10am on a wednesday calls you a racist, thus revealing his own racism.

and someone waiting for the bus decided to knock over my motorcycle, about $175 in damage. fucking fuck(and some more fucks….)

muni eventually called me back two days later and told me that before i was born (i’m 31) the 14 used to run down south van ness and everything was fine then so why not now (i’m calling bullshit). muni blamed it on the city. the city won’t respond to my calls. they never do.

so, in short, fuck the city, fuck the people who marginalize minorites in to a crime class, fuck cops, fuck muni, and help everyone if you can.

    • sim says:

The guy who hates cops calls the city and wants them to send some bureaucrat down to his house and clean the riff raff off his steps? That’s a cop’s job.

    • Logical Fallacy says:

Yeah you guys aren’t racist/ classist. But you’re certainly doing a meticulously well-realized imitation of people who are.

  27. 14Mish says:

Having the 14 on SVN has definitely trashed the street. SVN has never been a nice street but the MUNI stops are horrible. Since the 14 arrived my building gets tagged, pissed on, and piled with trash every week. I’ve arrive home 3 times in the last month to a guy pissing on my front door…someone waiting for the bus. Go back to Mssion st. 14. You’re not wanted on SVN.

  28. lurkskatesf. says:

haha everyone crying about da trash/drugs/tagging/bullshit but what about the people that actually live on mission st.who deal with this shit every year.
chill out s. van ness. youre like 2 blocks from mission nigga this aint noe valley.

    • 14Mish says:

No, not going to chill out when someone is pissing on my door as I get home. Maybe the businesses on Mission didn’t complain enough about this crap.

What’s your address lurkskatesf? How many times would I need to piss on your door until you wouldn’t like it either?

      • lurkskatesf. says:

well shit, i dont reside on south van ness so pissing on my door is not really necessary. but i’m around 26th & treat though if ya wanna come by, don’t be scared of the black dudes in hoods. bring enough king cobra for us all, lez party.

        • But but but but says:

I know it used to be a problem before, but it’s affecting white people now. So we must blog about it on the internet. Didn’t you hear? White women are being cat-called!!!

      • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

I dunno, but anyone who uses “mish” as shorthand for “Mission” gets automatically disqualified from relevancy.

  29. Tiny Tim says:

Popeyes, King Cobra and chips are nutritious foods purveyed by local businesses. Please patronize them to keep our economy humming and keep our people enslaved by obesity and diabetes. This will ensure that the healthcare chains will thrive. (the only problem is that we may not have enough healthy enlistees for the next war that we must fight to promote OUR democratic way of life–SuperPAC, lobbyist and corporate controlled government.)

  30. GG says:

I don’t have a dog in this fight, but I don’t understand the comments from the “This is what we have to deal with all the time on Mission!” crowd. People who chose to live on Mission did so with knowledge that all this stuff is part of the deal (and contributes to their rent being cheaper). People on SVN didn’t choose to live along the 14 route, Muni re-routed it after they already lived there, so why can’t they complain? Seems reasonable.

BTW, JL, please cite even one documented case of someone in the US getting a blood-borne disease from poop on the street. The fact that it’s disgusting is argument enough, there’s no need to introduce medical disinformation.

  31. Your post is funny! I’ve live in Mission for years and have heard of the same experiences from friends. Luckily, I’ve never been a victim of anything like this. Thus, I have good memories of the place.

  32. 20 year old college student says:

    omg racist
