They built the tube in sections, towed them out to the bay, sunk them, and divers welded the pieces in place.

As in, under the water, then further under the bottom of the ocean, tunneled into the depths of the earth. Physical ground. My girl is a station agent, yet I JUST found this out 2 days ago when I stopped by to eat the rest of her lunch from Specialties. Nom nom some kind of egg sandwich. Not sure how the subject came up. Oh wait, it was tourists wanting to take the ride ‘under the ocean’. Sarah told me then.
