Bike thief steals bicycle, tries to sell it on Craigslist, gets busted by its owner who TRACKS HIM DOWN from Portland to Seattle

Not sure if you’ve seen this already, but let this stand as testament to how much cyclists care about their bicycles and just how far they’ll go to recover their rides.  Check out the whole thing either here or below:

Two things about this:

1) When our protagonist attempts to make a citizen arrest, he doesn’t tackle the guy as an overzealous I may have done in that situation.  He keeps his cool and keeps documenting.

2) I’m totally wearing my lucky hat tomorrow.  And I’m never ever wearing a black shirt with green stripes.

Also, don’t forget to write down your bike’s serial number, which is the only way you can really prove that you’re its rightful owner.  And not on your wrist!  Save that for show stamps and slap bracelets!

(Thanks Jin!)

I think I can see where the dweeb’s spine is supposed to be.

should use a frame grab that shows the thiefs full face instead of the cropped one that’s up, that coward piece of shit.

Another good way to prove a bike is yours is to write your name, address, and some phrase on a piece paper, roll it up and drop it in the seat tube. If it is ever in question who the bike belongs to you just have to get the piece of paper out.

  4. CampyOnly says:

I would add to KillerTofu’s suggestion: put that piece of paper in a Zip-Loc type bag, or laminate it. Also, it might be better to put it inside the steerer tube or between the steerer tube and head tube. More work, yes, but there’s less chance of being discovered by the thief.

Now that I think about it, placing the paper between the steerer tube and head tube is probably not the best idea from the point of view of the bike’s performance. Any thoughts?

Thief is just going to get a slap on the wrist. The posse should have put him down while they had the chance.

Oh, of course, because what could possibly go wrong with vigilantism.

  8. Noticed this linked news story via Fark that says charges were dropped. No idea why, though.

  9. Andy says:

Even though the charges were dropped, he still has an arrest record… and the protagonist also knows where “Craig” lives. Street Justice is in order.

Looks like the og video has been taken down from YouTube (a result of the trial?), but I was able to find it still live here:

  14. I was just seeking this info for some time. After 6 hours of continuous Googleing, finally I got it in your website. I wonder what’s the Google’s problem that does not rank this type of informative web sites closer to the top. Generally the top sites are full of garbage.
