The invisible bicycle helmet?

What started as a school project for these two Swedish designers turned into 7 years of research, 10 million dollars in venture funding, and what might be the hot new solution to helmet hair. I’m not going to spoil it for you, so you should watch the video for yourself. If it works, it’d be pret-ty incredible.

Would be so damn useful in San Francisco! Acts as a scarf and keeps you warm on the cold SF nights/days, saves your life without looking stupid.

I won’t be wearing this neckbrace instead of a helmet.

I’m really not sure about this. It costs hundreds of dollars, is single-use, and HOPEFULLY will deploy in case of an accident. That’s not a good combination.

All helmets are single-use. Any time a helmet endures an intense impact, the materials lose their cushioning quality. This is true of motorcycle helmets as well.

I understand that. The difference being that other helmets cost $30, not $600.

I wise old Scottish engineer will one day say this as he hands a pocket full of Transwarp isolinear chips to an equally wise doctor with the spirit of a dead Vulcan in his head:

The more you over take the plumbing, the easier it is to stuff up the drain.

    Just wear a fucking helmet.

i think this is the most creative addition to cycling that i have seen in a long time, it supports areas that a helmut normally wouldn’t- of course the cost would drop once its in large production- air bags are one use only as well, and I am totally cool with paying for new ones in a life or death situation- so many of my friends are so vain that they would rather spill their brains than wear a lid- perhaps they would wear this-

Interesting and creative idea, but I think it arises from a point of view that conventional bicycle helmets are considered “not cool” or “are unwieldy”. Personally I would rather be safe than “cool”. When in a car you don’t question wearing a seat belt, what’s wrong with a regular bicycle helmet?
