Details on Kink.com’s Armory Club, set to open in former Ace Cafe space by the end of the month

Grub Street has the scoop:

[T]he new bar will have a serious cocktail focus, with a weekly changing cocktail menu, farmers’ market ingredients, and even a Champagne cart on weekends. As for the décor, it’s going to echo the sort of dark-red, heavily draped Victorian interior of their Upper Floor, a set they use at the Armory for a BDSM video site.

[...]

Also, there will be erotic art installations from local artists, and a private lounge that’s available by reservation with its own separate entrance. It also sounds like they’ll be using this private barroom as a launching point for the popular public tours of the Armory.

Champagne cart! Read on.

And if you haven’t watched the short film about the final days of the Ace Cafe, set aside some time this afternoon.

To hell with this. I like Kink, but the Ace was a great bar, and they really screwed over Rob, the former owner. Won’t be going anytime soon.

    • Damnomad says:

Absolutely agreed!! Ace was an awesome bar with a fun and diverse clientele. They catered to the motorcycle crowd of SF, real riders who needed a place to hang out and talk, drink, eat, after a long day riding, or working. But all kinds of other people came there as well, including a growing local crowd who were all cool as well. I will not support this new bar or Kink. I like the idea, and would probably visit otherwise, but after what they did to Rob and all of us… no can do. No Thank You!
Here’s an idea. Kink, you help Rob find a new place, and all will be forgotten.
      Seriously!

      • MotorcyclesOfDeathMetal says:

You should go to the Board of Supervisors and let them know that the Ace had historic importance to the people-of-cycle community. It should remain motorcyclist-owned!

Is “what they did to Rob” covered in the short film? If not, spill: what did they do to Rob?

  4. Jam says:

I’m glad you mentioned the film. Thanks.

I liked Aces. But I wouldn’t blame the owners for taking a better opportunity. That would be foolish.

I choose what is best for me. And others should as well.

The new bar sounds like a nightmare.

Let me rephrase.. it sounds like The Onion making fun of San Francisco’s cocktail bars: “a weekly changing cocktail menu, farmers’ market ingredients, and even a Champagne cart on weekends.”

      • Wowzers says:

Even the guy who sells $300 denim pants that come with certificates of provenance is throwing shade.

This City is nigh on fucked, huh?

That place was a sketchfest in the ’80s and ’90s; the story I remember hearing is that it was a front for a drug ring. It was closed for years until Rob took over the lease. He ran a good operation, but when your landlord wants the space, your landlord gets the space.

Don’t like it? Buy your own building and liquor license. Problem solved.

The gentrification of dive bars is sickening…soon even the Phone Booth and the Attic will be shut down and reopened as boutique bars catering to the most delicate palates and enthusiasts rather than the rest of us who just want a place to hang and get fucked up on cheap beer and smoke cigs. Rant over…packing my bags and moving to Milwaukee. Fuck off SF!

  10. one says:

NOT THE ATTIC!!!!!!NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the phone booth, meh.

  11. Elizabeth says:

Since when has the Attic been a dive?
