BART is planning to add some ‘Burning Man flavor’ to 24th Street BART plaza with help of Los Angeles-based artist???

This is making the rounds on Facebook today:

Dear Mission Community!

After many years, the 24th Street BART Plaza will get a fresh face. However, BART is not planning on putting the face of the Mission Community on it. BART staff and committee members have decided to hire an artist from LA to do the work. They have said that the Mission is changing and that the new face must reflect that change. So, they are looking to give it a “Burning Man flavor”.

It was for this reason that Precita Eyes’ approved plan was rejected by the committee. Almost all of the committee members don’t live here.

The people of the Mission paid a huge price when BART was imposed on Mission Street. We need to let them know that we will not accept the wiping out of the community just yet!
So far the process has been flawed. We are still here and want the process stopped and redone with our voice included. We need to have people who live in the Mission be on the committee.

BART will host the next Community Meeting to update
you on the 24th Street plaza redesign next Wednesday night.

We hope you can join us for this meeting of the Community Advisory Committee.

6:30pm – 8:00pm

I mean, I thought we were all in agreement about Burning Man being a thing of the Mission past.

(Thanks, Ricky!)

So excited for the insight that this posts comments will bring!

  2. Bilbo says:

This is some bullshit, but I also don’t understand why it’s bad to have a Bart stop “imposed” at 24th and Mission.

  3. Matthew says:

Does anyone know where the quote about “Burning Man flavor” comes from? Also, who’s the artist?

  4. view site says:

Nice post. I was checking continuously this blog and I’m impressed! Very helpful information particularly the last part :) I care for such information a lot. I was looking for this certain information for a long time. Thank you and best of luck.

  5. Steve says:

Even if they are going for “Burning Man Flavor”, are they not aware of the hundreds of burners and Burning Man-related artists that live in the Mission, let alone the thousands that live in San Francisco in general?

  6. MrEricSir says:

Is there some law that says every piece of public art in the Mission has to be approved by Precita Eyes?

  7. So many better choices says:

I think girafa would be better, or any number stencilistas.

  8. Sfnola says:

And I’m still upset about BART being imposed on Mission Street, what with making it all easy to get places without a car. Screw those guys and their public transit.

  9. Brillo says:

Subway stations don’t need to reflect anyone’s “community.” They need to give you access to the subway. Nothing more.

    • AttF says:

they don’t, but when you’re a publicly subsidized regional transit agency that is often in dire need of good PR and community relations, it is a good idea to reach out to the locals.

  10. GG says:

Creating a self-serving false divide to pit Mission Latinos against the people they perceive as gentrifying the community (those goddamn Burning Man people!) is a positive tactic that will surely work out well for them. Can’t believe no one’s thought of that before.

In all seriousness, though, I’ve always thought of the Precita Eyes folks as running a worthwhile community organization, so it’s kind of a bummer if these are the sort of histrionics they consider appropriate.

    • Bilbo says:

Why is it bad to want a local artist to get paid to make local art?

      • MrEricSir says:

Funny how nobody cares when we pay billions of dollars for a bridge made in China, but when someone from SoCal is hired to to create art for a subway station it sets off a shitstorm.

    • AC says:

histrionics? that’d be your posts on anything on this site. they’re not calling for a boycott/rally, just for interested people to show up at a committee meeting. CRAZINESS! Though I may not agree with the “imposed” part, they’ve been contributing public art/arts ed to the area for more than 30 years, and have definitely deserved a voice when it comes to murals around 24th.

these crackas have gone too far!

  12. Meowingtons says:

If the BART station end up covered in Playa Dust? That just might attract more hobos to use it as their personal litter box.

  13. Rich says:

My sister is a station agent @ 24th, I’ll get the inside scoop and report back.

  14. andrew says:

for my money, burning man is lame, but to each their own I suppose. The real issue is: why the hell hire someone from LA? Also, it is important that the larger mission community has some say in what it looks like. You have to hand it to the people in that part of the mission that are resisting the gross “post-modern bourgeois white man still wreckin’ shit for everyone and now we all got money from Facebook to really wreck it” mess that the 16th street zone has become. A lot of Latino homeowners and business owners as well as a lot of first wave missioners are still holding down the fort and should have a definite say in what their neighborhood looks like.

  15. paul says:

Can’t we just have just one surface that doesn’t chronicle the plight of a people being pushed out of their neighborhood? All those childrens’ drawings really bring me down.

  16. Jeffrey Taymore says:

The regulars at the 24th Street BART plaza will continue to display the “face of the Mission Community” regardless of what art is displayed around them.

  17. moto-waki says:

let’s pretend that clean is art & have them clean the shit out of what’s already there.

    • Rudy says:

omg. Don’t forget the piss as well. If you ever decide the elevator sounds like fun, that will be a thought squashed the first time you ride that thing (unless you really need to relieve yourself).

  18. citizen senior says:

    whats burning. man?

  19. scum says:

My ass is burning man. I eat to many raw peppers. Not to many raw peckers.

  20. Jesse says:

A recap of last night’s community meeting (from a friend who attended) on the artwork for the new 24th St. BART plaza:

“When the call for submissions for this project went out, community outreach was severely lacking. A committee of community members who have been working to incorporate work from local artists in the project expressed a great deal of frustration at being continually shut out and having their input repeatedly ignored. There is a great desire to preserve the tradition of culturally relevant artwork along the 24th street corridor.

That said, 3 three finalists have already been selected for the project (none are Mission residents, only one of them lives in the Bay Area – San Rafael). There seems to be no room for reconsideration on that point. The question now becomes: how to ensure that the community is involved in the final decision making process / how to ensure that the finalists work with local organizations in order to create a work that is relevant to the community, and how to implement a change in the process so that this sort of thing does not happen moving forward. There was a lot of emotion in the room – long time residents are feeling very displaced.

Representatives from both Supervisor Campos’ and Avalos’ offices were present to show their support for increased community involvement.

Next steps? Still a bit uncertain. The finalists are to submit proposals at the end of the year / beginning of next year. Ground breaking is slated for January and the project completion is expected by next October. “

  21. JMB says:

The LA v. SF beef is tired and lame. Who cares? Clearly people don’t have enough problems when something like this gets them so riled up. In a year or so when this mural is complete are people really going to walk by it and shake a fist at it saying “god damn LA artist!” Nobody has even seen the work yet. Besides there are plenty of local gentrifying artist…Siron Norris anyone.

    • You almost had me, until you ended with that ignorant dis of Sirron Norris. Dude has his faults, like all of us, but “gentrifying” aint one of ‘em.

    • Bilbo says:

You’re missing the point. The artist could be from anywhere outside of SF and people would have an issue. It’s the fact that they didn’t choose a local artist, not the fact that one of the finalists is from L.A.

  22. Matthew says:

    Nativism is so nineteenth century.

    • Bilbo says:

So is being pretentious and dismissive, but you seem to be keeping that trend alive.

      • Matthew says:

I’m not being dismissive at all. I think there’s legitimate concerns here–primarily the supposed lack of community input. I do, however, think that knee-jerk objections to an artist not being from the area (as commenters here have done) is terribly stupid, insular, and provincial. There’s nothing pretentious about that either, so essentially your comment was completely incorrect.

        • Bilbo says:

You’re right, your original comment wasn’t dismissive at all. It was incredibly nuanced.

SF’s art scene needs support. It makes sense that people would be upset that not a single San Franciscan is being considered as a finalist for the mural. Complaining about “provincialism” is de facto pretentious, just like using the phrase “de facto.” I understand that you’re well educated and have a great vocabulary, but your original comment was exactly as I’ve described it. Your attempt to make up for it, while also claiming that it wasn’t dismissive is funny in that you could just accept the criticism and then actually make your point – which paid lip-service to the “concern,” but then proceeded to call it knee-jerk, stupid, insular and provincial. Remember, “[i]t is OK to be called out. It is OK to be wrong. It is OK to learn.”

  23. scum says:

I think they should make the Bart trains look like Google buses, and the entrances of the stations look like condos.

  24. David says:

I live in the community and the only relevant issue is the work represent the mission; not that it be created by artists from SF. Quite frankly, I would be happy to get a different flavor or art at the 24th st Bart station. Why don’ the aggrieved community members petition SF to do the Bart Station at 16th or why not create a campaign for all the bus station?

  25. dima says:

The BART station is about as imposed as a Tuesday night bj. Yeah, may not be what you were planning on but is fantastic nonetheless.

  26. Hijo de la luna says:

ALOT OF U ARE MISSING THE POINT
THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH LA/ BAY BEEF
IT HAS TO DO WITH THE HIPTSTER EPIDEMIC THAT HAS PLAGUED THE MISSION. THE MISSION CATERRS TO ITS INCOMING NEW RESIDENTS AS THEY KICK OUT THE ORIGINALS. ADDITIONALLY, THE MISSION IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MOST UNIQUE AND AUTHENTIC ARTISTS WHO ARE INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED, THE FACT THAT NONE OF THEM WERE ASKED TO PARTICIAPATE IS TRAGIC. THOSE WHO HAVE THINK BURNING MAN THEMES SHOULD BE IN THE MISSION NEED A HISTORY LESSON. YOU ALL CAN STAY IN BURNING MAN AND STAY OUT OF THE MISSION.
