Crackdown on RVs and other oversized vehicles that like to park overnight

Mission Local reports:

Oversized vehicles that line the streets of the Northeast Mission will have to start parking elsewhere after the Board of Supervisors approved a law on Tuesday that prohibits them from parking overnight.

Over objections by homeless advocates that the law criminalizes the poor, the Board of Supervisors passed the ordinance 7-4. Supervisors John Avalos, Jane Kim, David Campos and Christina Olague cast the dissenting votes.

Starting March 1, any vehicle that is 22 feet in length and 7 feet tall will be banned from parking overnight on certain city streets from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. or risk being fined or towed.

In the Mission, the SFMTA intends to install signs prohibiting oversized vehicles from parking on 16th and 17th Streets between Harrison Street and Potrero Avenue.

Just 16th and 17th? That leaves a LOT of other streets, right? (Such as Florida, seen above.)

Yeah, can we get this on the northern parts of Shotwell and Treat too? I wouldn’t mind so much if they didn’t always smell like poo while running their motors all night.

    • Christine says:

I’ve always been tempted to call them in on the basis of the 72 hour rule, but I don’t want to be the asshole that gets someone’s home towed away.

And to show that the supes mean bid-ness, full-on pruning of the shrubbery on La Playa took place today; no more leafy toilet, trash den or stash cache.

  3. Ryan says:

I park my vehicle in this area. I have a job. I don’t live in the vehicle. I’ve never gotten a 72 hour violation (which is another issue in my opinion, but I understand it’s already the law). If you want to clean up the area, why not crack down on camping on the sidewalk, (even the camping in vehicles, though I admit that’s how I got my start in the city) or running engines over night (similar to regulations set for truckers). Those with larger vehicles should have access to the same free parking as the rest of the community. This regulation affects hard working people as well.

    • thanks says:

what would happen if every hard working person in the community felt entitled to park a vehicle that takes up 5 parking spots on the street?

  4. wha says:

there’s already a ‘no habiatation in vehicles’ law. why not simply enforce that?

    • MrEricSir says:

Because if you have a law that’s not being enforced, you need to add a second law that will also not be enforced.

That’s how it works in San Francisco, or have you forgotten the whole sit-lie thing already?

  5. Moon says:

With apologies to Ryan, the overwhelming majority of the RVs here are not the uninhabited vehicles of responsible owners.

Typically, they’re the half-heartedly modded scum dens of burners and the deeply strung-out; white kids with dreads stagger from them onto the sidewalks to shit where children and dogs walk. I’ve never seen anyone from the RVs go to local businesses, participate in neighborhood life, interact with anyone, etc.

None of that’s criminal. But it’s not surprising that the community wants these things gone: they consume lots of parking space and bring tons of mess, druggie detritus, and creepy bros.

It sucks that owners like Ryan are penalized for the reputation earned by guys like the dudes in the one bus who just straight pour their garbage onto the sidewalk and leave actual trails when they emerge from it. But the impact of RV parking is on the locals, and I’m happy that the local government has acted.

  6. GG says:

A lot of them are fire hazards, too. I walk down Folsom and Harrison (coming from SOMA) regularly and often the owners of these RVs will be hanging out next to them with the doors open… you look inside and 9 times out of 10, they look like a hoarder’s den, stuffed with garbage. I recognize that it would be tough for a fire from an RV to spread to nearby buildings, but it’s still not exactly a safe situation.

    • Hmm says:

Weird, I live right by them, and also walk to and fro, and rarely do see them out. You must “work” similar hours to them.

    • Fire Hazards says:

You’re talking about fire hazards? What an arcane complaint. They would have to be parked inside the building for this to be a complaint. The fuck are you smoking?

      • GG says:

I can’t believe I’m bothering to spell this out, but the SFFD actually cares if the people INSIDE the RV die in a fire, and if they have to expend resources rescuing them, even if it doesn’t spread anywhere else. And, again, can’t believe I have to point this out, but it was a passing comment on what I’ve noticed upon walking by, not a professional evaluation of the likelihood of fire danger.

I’ve lived at 17th and florida for 5+ years and never once have I had any issue with, or reason to complain about the owners or inhabitants of these vehicles being in my neighborhood. I don’t see what the fuss is about honestly.

My gripe with the hood is all the trash on the sidewalks. I can’t walk my dog 10 paces without having to say ‘leave it’ over and over again.

  12. rich shapiro says:

People are the most sickening creatures on the planet, there is no inaccuracy in that statement. Once most people don’t find themselves in a certain situation in life, they could give a flying fuck about those who have to live it. Many RVers have no alternative but to live in their RVs. To make it essentially illegal to live in these things essentially dooms them to the bushes and any overhang they can find. If that isn’t evil I don’t know what is. Americans being the most kind, generous, giving people in the world? My fucking ass. Most americans are ego self centered scum who could truly care less about their fellow man once it doesn’t fit into their twisted view of reality. For those who give a shit about truth, real truth, absolute truth, just youtube Jed McKenna, and get your ass kicked into eternity where it belongs, thus the ability to shove your preposterous beliefs up your ass and leave them far behind in lieu of deal with the real you, which is NO SELF. Yes, no self. There is only false self and no self. And until we get that, we will endlessly rule our roost with nothing by false self, the fear induced, self aggrandized ego.

With havin so much content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright infringement?
My site has a lot of completely unique content I’ve either authored myself or outsourced but it
seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my authorization.
Do you know any solutions to help stop content from being ripped off?

    I’d definitely appreciate it.
