Whenever I see a cool car around the neighborhood, I take pictures and send them to my pal Eric up in Portland who runs Other People’s Things, my favorite car blog. He responds with some knowledge and we post the results here and it’s called “Car Beat.” Here’s what Eric has to say about this sporty old VW:

This is a second generation Volkswagen Scirocco (1982-88 in the US). The Scirocco, much like all Volkswagens of the time, was named after a trade wind. This was the Italian name for winds travelling from North Africa to Southern Europe.

The second generation is decidedly ’80s with its sealed beam square headlights and angular body. The B-pillar logo denotes that the styling was handled by the Karmann company, best known for its sleek Ghia models.

What’s sad about the Scirocco is that there is a relatively new, super bad-ass version of it driving all over Europe and we don’t get it. Why? Because VW’s financial gurus know that to export it here and sell it at the right price will net zero profit….in fact it would cannibalize Golf sales. Oh well, I assume in 25 years or so we’ll see them start to pop up here and there.

The Golden Hour! First one is tonight! Back in 2008 I took a trip to Los Angeles and tweeted about what a good time I was having and got into a Twitter feud about whether or not my excitement would impact my “Mission cred” or something. I wrote a post about the ordeal, and one of the things I mention as I’m ticking off great things about LA is Wayne White and his paintings (such as the one above). Well, turns out he’s got a lot of other talents too, and somebody just made a movie about him:

Part biography, part live performance, BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING tells the irreverent and inspiring story of this one-of-a-kind visual artist and raconteur. The film traces White’s career from an underground cartoonist in the East Village to his big break as a designer, puppeteer and voice-over actor on Pee Wee’s Playhouse for which he won three Emmy’s. It follows Wayne’s success designing and animating for other children’s shows like Beakman’s World and The Weird Al Show and music videos for Peter Gabriel (“Big Time”) and Smashing Pumpkins (“Tonight, Tonight”) through a dark period of struggle and self-reflection before emerging in his present-day incarnation as a respected painter and performer. I can’t seem to find the menu anywhere, but It’s brunch, and it’s at Boogaloo’s, and it’s on a Friday night! ChefRoulette is the name of the organization organizing these things. Here’s the deal:

I figured this would be of interest since it’s apparently the only Berlin-style ping pong party happening this month. Plus, the Lower Haight is my second favorite neighborhood, and the home of the best burrito in town. (AND, one of the poster models is Vic Wong, who as of one post ago is tied with Andrew Sarkarati for most prolific Mission Mission writer ever, other than me.)

Also, the musical program this time seems pretty interesting:

Psmzntl, DJ Fgsfds and DJ Jerky Joerg will be manning the decks, and here’s what they promise: “Looks like an eclectic set and we’ll tag team it to hop genres and decades. Maybe no country. Tunes, songs, nuggets, slop.” YUSSS!!!!
