Caesar Chuc, kitchen legend

A beloved member of San Francisco’s restaurant scene fell victim to violence during Monday night’s brawl. His friend and colleague Eric Ehler would like to say a few words:

Long time Serpentine cook, Caesar Chuc, was attacked at 16th and Valencia, on Tuesday morning, at around 2. The only thing we know is that he was somehow involved in a brawl, and was found unconscious, and with no pulse. He was rushed to SF General, and is hanging on with life support, however he is not expected to make it.

Caesar was a family member to everyone who worked at Serpentine, and a friend to dozens of other cooks and restaurant workers in the City. Serpentine ran, because of Caesar.

He came to the United States 6 years ago, in hopes of providing a better life for his family back in the Yucatan. He worked numerous jobs is kitchens around the City, and quickly became a legend among kitchen crews. Not only was he a selfless gentleman that would go down in flames with any kitchen crew; he also was the guy to call if you needed something. If you needed a fill in line cook, dishwasher, cleaner, whatever, Caesar was the guy to call.

We’re praying for you, Caesar, and even if you pass, your legend is going to live on.

Thanks, Eric. Pull through, Caesar.

SFGate says: “Anyone with information about the fight is encouraged to contact San Francisco police. Callers can use an anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the text with SFPD.”

    Poor guy.

  3. scum says:

This is really shitty, my thoughs and prayers are with him and his.

  4. My heart goes out to his family what a tragic story!

Another murder at the feet of SFPD and their unwillingness to protect well popular, commercial streets. They’ll never catch who did this.

  6. Jason7734 says:

    You’re an asshole, Kyle.

I am NOT a fan of SFPD or cops in general, but unless you understood how fucking asisine this neighborhood gets when the bars let out, then you wouldn’t know.

I drove and saw this in progress, and there was no less than 6 cop cars on the scene. Dumb shit happens fast.

Throw more stones – in the meantime, let’s hope this shit doesn’t happen again anytime soon.

You’re a bigger Asshole, Jason, for pretending you were anywhere near this. Nice that cops show up after the fact. Where are they to keep things in order if things get asinine so quickly every night at the same time? They’re not even around when a band of shit heads start breaking windows.

  7. Jason7734 says:

I get what you’re saying, there Kyle, but FUCK YOU.

I drove by after I got off my bar job at 2:06am.

I was also working the night the “Black Bloc” went on their rampage.
I watched as those assholes marched on by my work, fucking shit up. The cops didn’t do shit that night, just followed them from a distance down the street – total bullshit. This is a different.

What I’m getting at here is that you can’t possibly pinpoint when violence is gonna happen – a man’s life was at stake here – and I saw him laying face down on Valencia outside of Arinell’s Pizza.

The new Mission sucks – I liked it better when the OLD Mission was more predictable in it’s violence.

Cops don’t protect their own asses & that’s about it.

I’m not sure what your point is. You seem to think you are entitled to something. Or believe someone should help you.

You seem to think that events are in your control. They are not.

You live where you live. You breathe where you breathe. We are all a blink of an eye from death. We will never no what strange hour it may come (JM quote).

Preventable? Of course if we can see the future like you.

Your last statement made no sense. But that is par for the course. Nothing makes sense. I have seen 4 dead bodies in the 2 1/2 years I have lived here on valencia. I relish in the fact i wasn’t one of them.

I think it’s cute that you don’t know how to use the reply button.

  8. abolish says:

Sure Jason, let’s just throw up our hands and say there’s nothing that could’ve been done to prevent this.

    • Whataperv says:

Without knowing what actually happened and how it’s impossible to decide what could have been done to prevent this, short of standing a cop on every corner (and, of course, that comes with its own issues.)

This is a horrible situation, but it shouldn’t be used to paint the Mission as some kind of war zone or to attack the police when no one has any facts about what happened or how the police responded. It only takes a few seconds for someone to get injured like this.

  9. what can be done? says:

Police work in SF is reactionary instead of preventive because the people of the city insist that it be that way, the usual process-over-results that is the SF way. The gray area policies that result give us what we have today.

Want to talk preventative measures? Moratorium on liquor and beer/wine licenses in the neighborhood? The current Supes are pushing for more licenses and relaxed rules.

Request ABC to bust establishments serving visibly drunk patrons? See how that goes with the local business owners and their employees.

Give cops a mandate to spear fish in the barrel by issuing open container, public intoxication, and disorderly conduct citations? Give the police Giuliani-style license in the neighborhood to play rough and shake down shady customers? Yeah, I didn’t think so.

    • Whataperv says:

Community policing works as well, statistically, as broken windows policing.

Please present evidence that shows a substantive overlap between open container violators and violent criminals.

    • Freedrinker says:

Dude, there are barely enough liquor stores in the Mission open after 10pm to keep me happy, let alone all the outerville interlopers. I am a 25+year resident and the decline has been precipitous during my stay. I think the violence stems from this situation alone – not enough liquor stores, forcing everyone into a few venues which become powderkegz. Walk up Mission from 15th to 30th after midnight – I bet there are no more than 5 stores open – and that’s a damn long walk.

      • respondent says:

That’s 15 blocks with 5 stores, about one every 3 blocks, making you 1.5 blocks from your 40 at all times.

If you’re too drunk to walk a block and a half you’re done for the night, dude.

oh no! caesar is the sweetest, hardest working man. i had the pleasure of working with him at serpentine. he ALWAYS helped others out. my thoughts are with him and his family.

  11. WIL MUL says:

Have you ever considered about adding a little bit more than just your
articles? I mean, what you say is important and all.
However imagine if you added some great pictures or video clips to give your posts more, “pop”!
Your content is excellent but with images and video clips, this site could certainly be one of the very best in its field.
    Superb blog!
