Most Bay Area art is pretty bad, too much of an insular bubble and too many people happy with what's being produced rather than 'hungry' artists with more competition and more drive to push the limits rather than what fits in with the status quo. From what I've witnessed it's like this with Theatre, Burlesque, Music, most forms of art really. People are too happy with what's currently being produced and not taking enough risks... It's just all too obvious.
