Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos: Special Occasions

Every week, photographer Joshua Cobos shoots a roll of film just for us. He picks the best 13 photos and we post them here, and it’s called “Bad Blood with Joshua Cobos.” Here’s what Joshua has to say about this batch:

I use AGFA black and white film for special occasions, a film they stopped producing right about the time I graduated high school. Back then I was working in an Orange County photo lab that was full of AGFA films, now i’m down to my last 12 rolls. Analogue photography requires time, experimentation, patience, constant self critique and the willingness to refine and question your technique.

Thanks, Joshua! Ten more shots after the jump:

    Love the first shot.

    Amazing foliage texture.

And then there’s that line of leaves going diagonal from the bottom right to the upper left of the frame.

    Bravo.

When I was in High School, a friend ran through that glass wall in image 11 trying to escape from the security guards, it was about 3 AM and we were all dropping acid at the time, it was like the scene in Blade Runner. He almost died.

    Beautiful pictures.

Holy Shit. Cemetery shots – so amazing!!

Keep taking the sickest shots in SF. Love that the girl is in the middle in every composition. Is that the theme? Never mind, it doesn’t matter…hella tight.

MissionMission – thanks for bringing this amazing photographer to our attention. Hope this unique work is not costing you to much.

I was initially going to guess that you lack personal passion, so feel the need to spread your negativity and disdain for any attempt by others to pursue their own.

But then I took a step back and really saw what you did and was in awe of your display: You call the photographer out for being perfunctory and banal,by using the same tactic in executing your remark.

I thought you were just a snarky asshole, but it’s obvious you are a self-aware, high functioning genius.

Every time I see the “Bad Blood” photos I think there are one or two that are pretty cool. Others don’t do much for me. But being creative week after week is fucking hard, putting yourself out in the public eye is hard, and I really applaud Cobos for doing his thing with the full awareness that there will be various trollsters talking shit. It takes zero talent, commitment, originality or energy to write crap in the comments.

I do music in my spare time and 98% of the stuff I do sucks shit. It takes a lot, lot, lot of work to produce good art or even halfway decent art, and I think Cobos actually has a pretty good percentage of success to failure.

for that matter, when I look through a book of Walker Evans photos or read a bunch of Auden poems I think the same thing. Lightning doesn’t strike every time. It strikes once in a while.

honestly, this photographer is another shitty photographer who needs to take some lessons on light, composition and how to take interesting photos.

first one is really good. white top, black background / slash black bottom white background. nicely done.

rest are boring as shit, messy, trite, and lacking much merit of any kind.

the one of her standing between the columns has some nice leading lines and framing. but i would actually crop it down to just the inside of the doorway, and leave the columns out, theyre heavy and irrelevant to the image.

  7. Bored says:

Most of the photos would be much better without the model. Crouching cat excepted; that one’s pretty good.

  8. bah says:

Once again, you are a shitty photographer who apparently doesn’t know how to read a light meter.

  9. Sheears a likeness with Irma Vep!! Yep
