Fatal car crash on South Van Ness this morning

Mission Local has more:

A car collision on 21st Street and South Van Ness Avenue Tuesday at about 8 a.m. led to the death of two people, and left one in life-threatening condition at San Francisco General Hospital, SFPD media relations officer Carlos Manfredi said.

Police responded to a call of a shooting from a black four-door vehicle near Valencia Gardens at about 7:45 a.m. The officers saw the vehicle a few blocks away and attempted a traffic stop . . .

UPDATE: A reader sent us a pic of the car against the liquor store.

UPDATE 2: The pedestrian killed at the scene has been identified as 26 year old Francisco Gutierrez.

  1. That explains the half-dozen or so cop cars that I saw blasting out of 17th Street and turning down Mission, this morning, about 8 AM.

    • Shortly before that, BTW, a car drove past me on Mission and someone inside yelled something rude at me. I wonder if the curse I put on him had something to do with this.

    I blame bicyclists. They’re such a nuisance!

The most disgusting thing about these gang bangers is how often they hurt innocent people.

  4. Maria Melo says:

does anyone happen to know the name of the innocent bystander that was killed?

Fuck those high speed police chases. Always ends badly.

I agree about police chases! The police say they were not chasing, but a witness wrote on Mission Local blog that they were chasing, and that there were gunshots at the crash site. Perhaps the sound of the store door breaking sounded like gunshots. I live very nearby but I didn’t witness the crash. I noticed there were way more police than usual and a lot of men in suits–kind of weird on a holiday morning or at any crash. Anyone know who all the men in suits were? They spent all day there surveying the site, marking the skid marks, etc. either to prove that they didn’t chase the car or to make it look like they didn’t. No police chases! They are stupid. One news source said that the driver of the white car also died in the hospital. That’s three innocent people killed. I hope journalists and the victims’ lawyers keep digging to find out what exactly led to this horrible crash. In September 2011 the very same series of events led to a spectacular collision at 20th and Folsom, but that time, by sheer luck, nobody was badly hurt.

I believe a patrol car stopped the suspect at 21st and Mission upon which the suspect sped away as the officer walked up to the vehicle. The crash occurred at 21st and South Van Ness which is two short blocks away. It is quite likely that the suspect had already crashed before the officer could even put his car into drive.

The people in suits were detectives and crime scene investigators. It is standard practice for them to cordon off a crime scene and collect evidence long after the crime has occurred.

I heard sirens BEFORE the big boom, so they were chasing them.

in a just world, this dude and whoever he’s living with in Valencia Gardens would be evicted. it sucks for everyone else who lives there as well as the whole neighborhood that Valencia Gardens continues to be a hotbed for violent crime.
