Now I’m thinking about this more and Evan’s right that there is some ambiguity in this specific case because he’s trailing off. So if it was dialog, for example, obviously there wouldn’t be a fourth dot. So maybe three would be better, but the existence of the fourth dot scenario does make Ariel’s calling it out somewhat inappropriate. I’m hung over.

I’ve always been on Evan’s side of this. I don’t have a specific source, that’s just how I learned it in school. Three dots for the missing text and one to end the sentence so that it’s not a fragment.

Not to be “that guy” but an ellipsis should have four dots, and spaces between them (like you did) when a sentence ends with an ellipsis, and is followed by another sentence (though I’m not sure if a URL counts as an additional sentence). For whatever that’s worth.
