Mona Caron’s “MANIFESTATION STATION” replaced with avant garde retro “Boring Box”

The current piece:

Caron’s work:

Let’s hope she is able to do something new here, and that her amazing piece that was there has been somehow salvaged.

UPDATE: Uptown Almanac noticed that Hugh D’Andrade found the original work held captive in a Muni yard, it’s future uncertain.

Ugh. Only a utility company would have the balls to be this crass.

  2. Guy says:

    I love the new look!

  3. hater says:

Since when is Church and Duboce in The Mission? You might consider rebranding.

  4. Hugh says:

I have heard from the artist. She is just as surprised as everyone else. No warning, no questions — nothing. Just a photo sent to her of a grey box where here mural once stood.

    I’m pretty mad about this.

  5. Hugh says:

I just heard back from SFAC. They did not commission the piece and don’t know anything about it. The box was commissioned by MTA and DTNA, so this must be their doing.

  6. TinyTim says:

Let’s get Mona’s work back!! She has done beautiful work in the nabe. Vive Mona Caron!

  7. ts says:

yep one of the best muralists in the world. But me thinks you alan and your little nabob apolitical liberal friends don’t give two shits about her class warfare and anarchist leanings.
    that’s ok.
lets just consume and take pictures. No content required. CALL THE COPS
through if her ‘ilk’ actually do some occupy shit again….

      > don’t give two shits about her class warfare and anarchist leanings

Confirmed. Why should I give a fuck? Paint ain’t gonna smash the state.

    • anadromy says:

kudos on the Spiro Agnew “nattering nabob” callback, bro! But, wow, you really sound like a dick.

    • Ariel Dovas says:

I was about to engage in a discussion with you about my history of political activism, but then I glanced at your comment history and saw that you just come here to blindly shit on whatever you see and realized it wasn’t worth the effort.

  8. Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

It was a totally fucking beautiful mural, but it wasn’t painted over… the utility box was replaced with a new one altogether.

  9. Gregor Miziumski says:

Sounds like MUNI never talked to the telecom (who owns the box. I suspect that this was just Utility company bureaucracy, not something intentional.

Someone shows up to do a job, replace a box with a new one… Whaddaya gonna do?

This article misses the point. Part of what makes street art special is its evanescence. See it while you can, because tomorrow it might be gone.

  11. patrick says:

She should show her art in galleries then.

  12. biglippedkneegrow says:

She could just take it as an opportunity to do another piece. Quit your crying.

  13. Rhiannon Charisse says:

Wow, impressive spam all of a sudden. This bit is straight up poetry:
“May just you please prolong them a bit from subsequent time?”

  14. Paul says:

The controller box was replaced after the completion of the Church & Duboce Rail Replacement project, as part of a system-wide upgrade of various electrical sectionalized switches and associated controller boxes. The urgency of replacing the switches was made apparent after the nine day shutdown at Church and Duboce, when one of the switches failed shortly after it was re-energized. To upgrade the switch at Church & Duboce, the associated painted box also had to be replaced. We are working to have the box re-painted by the artist. We anticipate this process will be complete within the next 3 months.

  15. SFnative says:

When I was a kid I remember walking past when she was painting her mural on Church and 15th. It’s amazing to still see so much of her work around the city now, as well as a shame that SFMTA just ripped it out without any regard to how much work the artist put into painting it.

    • Patrick says:

No, it would have been much better to leave a box with a failed switch that could have shut down the Muni Metro in order to save some street art.
