Mosquitoes lately

Local bug hunter David Enos reports on this season’s particularly wicked strain of mosquito:

The mosquitoes have been out of control this year, worst in town since 2007.  I used to be an expert – I could jump directly up to the ceiling with an open palm and they’d be dead before they could move.  I can never seem to find them anymore.  I circle the bed in my undershirt like someone’s insane father.  A lady tries to pull the comforter up enough to block all the harsh overhead lights I’ve turned on.  I give up.  We both wake with bites everywhere, on jawlines, foreheads, insides of the wrists.  I finally found one, a few days ago, behind boxes in the hallway.  It was mid-day and he did not expect to be caught.  Smashed into blood, our blood, like a vampire in the basement. Congrats on your kill, David. But yeah, they’re intense this year, right?

UPDATE: OH SHIT

This exactly describes my house this summer. I’ve NEVER seen the mosquitos this bad in SF. I wish the winter weather would come and destroy them all.

YES. I’ve had to install screens on every window.

Eek. You know they’ve discovered yellow fever-capable mosquitoes in the Bay Area this year: http://gawker.com/yellow-fever-mosquitoes-discovered-in-california-1448678827

Apparently this terrifying variety is black-and-white striped and actually “prefers to bite people indoors during the day,” though how they know that I know not. Screen your windows…?!

you can usually hear/see mosquitos when they are around. if you wake up covered in bites every day and can’t find the mosquitos, you may have bed bugs.

’s not bed bugs. These are mosquitos and there are 2 new species that have come to California this summer. The ones I’ve found in my home are super small. Like, the size ofa fruitfly and you don’t really hear them unless they get right up on your ear.

I thought it was just me with the skeeter problem this fall! I was secretly plotting against my neighbor cause I thought she must have buckets of water breeding them on her deck or something…. I agree the are wily little buggers.

Those guys are easier to catch when they’re well fed. They can’t fly more than 1 or 2 seconds on a full stomach.
