Complete bullshit on the part of the police, but not surprising. SF cops are known to be violent, which is why many individuals are arrested for resisting in the city and nothing else. When a cop beats someone up, they have to make an arrest for something.

Plain clothes cops in a housing project decide to go after a man for riding his bike on the sidewalk, something that happens all of the time every day a few blocks down on Valencia. They allege he ran. He’ll likely allege they didn’t identify themselves as police and the cops will allege they did.

They then performed a violent arrest for a “crime” that amounted to less than a misdemeanor. Of course he was then booked on two felonies that are used as cover the cop’s ass crimes – resisting and battery an officer. It is unclear if the police allege injury, but a felony resisting or battery has to include injury or recklessness towards human life, otherwise it would be a misdemeanor. But, because he’s booked on felonies, the bail is automatically set at a ridiculous level.

And then, of course, the DA has declined to file charges (at least initially). This means the DA’s office, an agency that usually spends a lot of effort backing up cops, doesn’t think there’s a case says a lot.

This is the SFPD’s spin on NYPD’s ‘Stop And Frisk’
and it does have *everything* to do with the current tech yuppie gentrification/overtake of the Mission.

    • Old Mission Neighbor says:

No it doesn’t. I work in tech and I have no problem whatsoever with anyone who lives in Valencia Gardens. I do have a problem with police beating up college kids for riding while black.

      • Val says:

Sure it does. Your not having a problem with anyone who lives there does not equate with a police policy to unreasonably hassle black and latino youth in the neighborhood.

    • umm says:

your weird scapegoating reveals your utter ignorance about the issue. if you think the police problems in the hood started with the tech bubble than you moved here after the tech bubble.

Funny how the fact that Williams bit an officer seems to get left out. Disgusting animal.

Obviously you are not at all familiar with the SF District Atty office and their track record of dropping even more serious charges. Spend a day at 850…you will learn ALOT, guaranteed.

      A few things:

      1. I’m in 850 all of the time. As a criminal defense attorney. What about you? The point is – it is unusual for them to back off of a situation like this so quickly where there’s clear 1983 potential.

      2. Dehumanizing someone profiled and then attacked by the cops, lovely.

He was being choked to death. Normal human reaction, trying to save one’s own life.

Funny how the fact that DJ had been downtown taking part in the BatKid event seems to get left out in the rush to portray this young man as a bad person or, as you disgustingly put it, an ‘animal’.

    • Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable says:

Good point, lalala, I absolutely agree with you that the police officer who assaulted this poor guy is nothing more than a disgusting animal unfit to wear that uniform. Hear, hear.

It’s unfortunate (in a general public-perception way) that he’s wearing a shirt with the word “gang” on it in that photo.
