Gin is my go-to cocktail spirit nowadays. I feel like there are a lot more things you can do with it than you can with a whiskey or bourbon.

If you're having trouble jumping on the gin bandwagon, go somewhere and ask for a Martinez to get your feet wet. The only places I really trust them to make me a solid Martinez these days are RN74 (seriously), Maven in the Lower Haight, and the place on Polk that is the new koko cocktails, which I can't remember the name of. Ask for it with Ransom Old Tom and thank me later.

83 Proof on 1st and Mission even has (or did have) a barrel-aged version of a Martinez, but that place sucks any time of the day you go in.

Or, just have two or three Last Words and you can forget you ever had gin in the first place.

I don't think the American palet is suited to gin, in general.
Historically, the G'n'T was a...how to put this in current terms.. a PrEP, guarding one ostensibly from malaria.
Hence, as a child brought up in England, this precaution, as well as being a mild sedative, was very efficasious as a substitue for mother's milk, and I did indeed never catch malaria.

A previous comment referenced the Vesper; also known to a few as "The Perfect Russian." This, to me, is truly the most potent cocktail available. Were one to consume twelve, as did Bond, one has to tip one's hat to such pefect self control in the face of normally obliterating alcoholic poisoning.
