San Francisco nightlife ‘hot spots’ then and now

Local nightlife historian David Enos takes a look back at happier times:

Edinburgh Castle, 2010.  There used to be many “hot spots” in town.  Uptown, El Rio, Hemlock, Elbo Room, Make-Out Room, Latin American, the Knockout.  You usually walked in and spotted several friends right away, or people you had seen around, wanted to meet, and were soon having drinks with.  A few years later it is an entirely remade city.  Everywhere is crammed full of unremarkable strangers. I feel the same way sometimes. But maybe it’s just that David and I are in our 30s now and our friends are married and boring or moved to New York (or both), and we’re too old to try to meet new people. I dunno.

Mostly I just love this picture.

Absolutely the same sentiment. 2010 was the year and one of the things that first had me falling in love with this city back then was the small community feeling in such a big city. And now I feel lost in a sea of strangers, most of whom I just don’t relate with because they either have only been able to survive here on the dollar of mom and dad, or through the contribution of some tech monolith like Twitter — either of which has not brought them to a true understanding of the creativity and dedication it takes to survive in this city. And my friends have gone and moved elsewhere, moved on, moved forward, and I get a little sad inside. And with all of these people, the city just feels that much more empty.

FWIW, the strangers may only be unremarkable because, well, they’re strangers.
