Psychedelia holds reign at The Fillmore

I’m going to tell you a secret: last night was my first time ever going to The Fillmore.

And seeing English psych-rock band Temples, with opening band Wampire (Portland), seemed quite appropriate, as the groovy light/bubble show oozed behind the stage. The only thing is that it made me wish I was 1) on drugs, and 2) actually seeing one of the many original bands that Temples’ sound replicates (Byrds, The Doors, etc).  Something about the whole experience seemed like a 60s Psychedelic Rock Revue. Once I got over that, it was a good time.

Things I was told to be excited about at the Fillmore:

a) Bucket of Apples to eat – Check!

b) Poster Room – Check!

Check out the Cardinal Fuzz label; they have lots of psych-revival bands that leave the pop/mainstream sensibilities behind and delve right into it. The Oscillation, Mug Star, Cult of Dom Keller, etc. Aquarius is the lone US distributor of the label.

Also, bands like The Third Sound, Harsh Toke, etc.

And, hey, why not get into some of the bands underappreciated bands that did it better than the big names? – Japan’s Far Out released one of the best 2-song LPs ever in 1971 (self-titled). Each track at roughly 18 minutes. Shinki Chen has incredible solo material, as well as collaborations under the name Speed, Glue, and Shinki. You can find both Far Out and Shinki’s stuff reissued by the reissue label Phoenix records.

Also, Purple Overdose from Greece were very influential in the 90s.

If more subdued, modern music is more your thing, check out Espers, great psych/acid folk from Philly. At times reminiscent of Fairport Convention. Meg Baird, group “leader”, has since relocated to the bay and plays hemlock often.

In closing, just listen to Can’s “Mother Sky” on repeat forever.

Listening to Temples makes me think of the type of guys who really like referring to themselves as “musicians” and claim Jim Morrison to be the greatest songwriter to ever live…otherwise known as “people with whom I would never associate”.

Whoa, way longer a response than intended…

Portland! Whoah, I hear everything is hip from there!

I love The Temples (so I guess “m” won’t be associating with me, though I’ll be interested in checking out the stuff on his list). I’m bummed I missed them.

Also I don’t like the Doors and don’t really see any connection at all here, other than the fact that they played the Fillmore a few times.

I’m also a fan of Temples, along with bands like Tame Impala and Black Angels. I don’t hear enough of a difference in bands like that versus some of the bands mentioned by m to have that sort of a perspective about it.
